Determine if in paint or crack?
Hi
So i have this nice frame with what potentially could be a crack. This was a very thin line from the beginning, tried to chip bit of with a screwdriver but dident reveal much more. How do i go about determining this in the best way? How much paint do i need to remove around the "hairline"? And how do i best remove it? Do i need to use a steel brush in the end or similar to c properly? Thanks for your suggestions. Last edited by tuscanyswe; 12-26-2017 at 04:53 AM. |

IMO thats a crack, sad is a pegoretti??
You have to remove all the paint, you can put some oil and see if it drips inside but is so low that it makes it dificult. Remove more paint thats the only way to be sure but from the picture you can see the line in the metal already. It can be fixed tho, you need a guy that can do fillets like yamaguchi for that. At the same time ask the guy to redo some of the other fillets so it looks the same all the way around the frame. |

That being said, I just bought the Steelman CX frame and it needs a repaint so I've been looking into that. Many of the places I've looked into do repairs on steel frames after stripping the paint. I'd suggest contacting one of the following and checking it out. Southwest Frame Works Franklin Frame - These guys do the paint for Bilenky Spectrum

I will just try to list it on here and take it from there. Value will be hard to determine (for me at least) so i will test the waters. Toptube: 53cm Ht: 9.7cm ST: 49.5 center to center. So abit long and low. Can be seen in the classifieds in a not to distance future with a few more images. Cheers B |

I wonder if someone would mind cracking a 56 or 57cm Duende? I'd appreciate that, thanks.

That looks like a crack. Looks very similar to my Breadwinner which got sent back and they confirmed it was a crack.

About that Breadwinner: Warranty I hope?

Absolutely a crack.
But it you want to self diagnose, use a razor blade to chip it away and find out. you need to chip a bit more than just the crack area tho. So a bit above and below. But all the ones posted, if I had someone bring those to me, I would say crack. |

Breadwinner guys are absolutely warranty'ing the frame. Sounds like they're going to re-weld beefier seat tubes on, then repaint.

Crack
The seat tube cracked on my Mosaic GS-1. Here are some before and after shots of the repair.

tuscany pal, sorry about this whole thing.
this is in my wheel house, obviously, with reference to my broken thread. Not sure if it's similar, but I had a crack on my steel custom frame somewhere in the same area on the bottom bracket. I had a local framebuilder fixed it for $250 not including repaint or rebuild, just strictly brazing. Just want to give you some idea so you can make a good decision.
