2024+ Rim brake vs Disc brake catch-all
Since there is a new rim vs disc brake thread created every week, usually with a slightly different flavor on page 1, which devolves into the same comments over and over and over, this thread will serve to catch them all.

I will merge as appropriate.

At the local ride(s) this morning, I counted roughly 60 bikes ... and only six had rim brakes. (Two were SR on custom frames.)

Mostly rollers around here; no big climbs or descents.

And frankly, I'm surprised there were still six rim-brake bikes.

Disc brakes work very well. And for me, they work better than rim brakes, and I live in a flat region. Not that rim brakes aren't fully capable, and I would happily ride a rim brake bike if that is all I had.

It isn't a competition. Ride what you like.

As recently as three months ago, my morning ride was all geezers on rim-brake bikes. But then my buddies started buying new bikes over the summer, and now disc-equipped rigs are the majority. Progress grinds the past to dust, leaving only nostalgia in its wake.

Seems that the gist of the debate is whether, in fact, disc brakes represent progress for road bikes (decidedly so for bikes that go off-road). Personally, even as a pretty fast descender braking has never been a problem for me, and I prefer the simplicity of rim brakes, so it's not progress for me, but I recognize that for others disc brakes offer more confidence.

I feel the same about road tubeless.

There is nothing new out there that interests me at all, I couldn't care less.

Riders will ride what is avalable and the industry is only offering disc brakes. Doesn't bother me one bit being the only guy in the group with a steel rim brake bike.

I'm not much of a debater, I'm afraid. I've ridden both and see virtues in each. That said, I'll continue to ride my antiquated rigs kitted with pre-modern parts. (Don't get me started on road tubeless. Bah!)

I don't have real issues with rim brakes either, but if I were to invest in a new complete bike now it would be disc without a doubt. Tire clearance is one reason for sure. The only reason I haven't done so is that I have a plethora of wheels that are high quality and rim, and I'm on a bike freeze and the rim brake stuff doesn't sell.
Tubeless, no. Not on a road bike.

I think the point of the OP was that of course you'd get a disc brake complete, because that's pretty much all you can buy now.

I think it's mostly just that you can't buy a new rim brake bike unless you try really hard. I don't think anyone's trying to "win" the brake war, just giving people what they expect.

As someone who has seven steel frame, rim brake road bikes; it isn't disc brakes. It's what disc brakes allow, good tire width/size. I ride my modern ti disc brake bikes more than all my old stuff because the roads are getting worse by the day.

I have discs on a tandem and dislike em. Not needed for the terrain we ride. They squeak. And im not crazy about the modulation.

On a group ride the other day, coming to stop cant tell ya how many folks had that annoying rattle/squeak from discs, all fancy bikes.

Oh well. First world problem.
