polishing carbon fiber

I recently removed the chorus lettering from the new cranks that have no clear coat over the lettering. It only took about a minute of wet sanding with 1500 grit to remove the lettering and another minute of hand polishing with automotive rubbing compound to restore the shine.

I have a relatively new fsa seatpost with white graphics that had a wrinkle in the clear coated decal that caused deterioration and looked bad, so I decided to try sanding off the clear coat and graphics, then polish instead of clear coating. I used 600 grit to remove most of the clear coat and graphics, then switched to 1500 to minimize the polishing. It was easy to polish the unidirectional carbon to a shiny finish and a lot less working than applying new clear coat. Now I have a no name, no graphics seat post.

Here's the crank.

The post on my Colnago:

The same post on my Cinelli. The post also had a white full length height scale along the back side that I removed.

Wow! That’s amazing. Made that Colnago look just like a Cinelli! Who’d a thunk

Sold one Colnago frame yesterday on eBay, the other auction ends tomorrow. The seat posts, saddles and bars are now on my two Cinelli frames. All other parts have now been sold. Now I'm a disc brake and tubless tire user.

I don't usually remove logos, but I have some Sram carbon cranks with obnoxious logos on them. Have to think about this

Might want to 303 it for some UV protection...

I'd not spray it and let it run down into the seat tube though, just wipe the visible post on a clean rag.

I have a striped look 585 I clean and hit with 303 few time a year, no clear coat...

Apparently Campy doesn't worry about UV damage. Their new cranks have no clear coat.

Looks great, I'd buy it if it was a 170.

Campagnolo 12 components have a special UV blocking resin that does not require a traditional clear coat. (Per the press coverage at launch)
