It's not a good analogy, however I get where the author is coming from, don't think its ridiculous. Here in Sacramento there are jump bikes everywhere. Many who will never pedal a non assist bike are now riding because of the assistance. Given the choice and means most people here in the USA will choose a pedal assist bike to get from point A to B and the reason is biking is work.

I passed through 6 airports this week. I used escalators and moving walkways at every opportunity because ... they are faster.

I'm sorry to report, one of the escalators is out of action. But, the good news is, you won't get burnt on the way up.
