OT: Did you watch "Greyhound" on AppleTV+?

It's on Apple TV+.

Tom Hanks...entertaining as usual.

Thought it was very good, no real build up before just full speed ahead action. Only gripe was the length, it’s such a fast paced movie that it’s over so quickly. Great film though

The battle scene (entire movie) was well done, but it basically lacked everything else to be a complete movie. The love story? Why even. Overall cool visuals, but a dud.

The book is quite good, "The Good Shepherd" by CS Forester,
of Horatio Hornblower fame.
Read "The Game of Birds and Wolves" first for context
and watch "Action in the North Atlantic" made in 1943.

I don’t understand the love story part, as brief as it was, makes me think the movie was edited down to basically the battles during the crossing. I’m assuming it wasn’t but being so short it feels like there should have been more, like about 40 minutes or so were chopped. No real build up and an abrupt end makes it feel like parts were missing.

Thew book is more than well-worth the read, it is intense and informing about the nitty gritty of the North Atlantic convoy struggles with wolf packs. It motivated me to read Battle of the Atlantic for a broader context about this part of the war. I plan to watch Greyhound, I was excited to hear about it after I read the Forrester book.

Watched it last night and also think it needed more.
Always like Tom Hanks though.

Raymond Massey and Humphrey Bogart. Alan Hale Sr. too. Great flick.

as a WWII history buff and aficionado of war movies, was hoping Hanks could make Greyhound be at least somewhat comparable to Saving Pvt Ryan.

even tho the CGI was good, character development was totally absent...just never felt connected to the people involved.

and an endless stream of course changes and rudder settings simply didn't make for compelling dialogue.

sorry, this one didn't do much for me.

That pretty much sums up the movie.

I think it's partly about setting up the right expectations. Say this is a short featured film (less than an hour) that is shown at a Marine War Museum and the audience were told this is to provide insight to some of the navy warfares that took place during WWII in the Atlantic and hopefully this will entice them to go read up more after they have watched it....I can see my 15-year-old saying to me afterwards...."hey, dad, that was an awesome show!"

Personally I did get interested enough to go read up about U--boats on the internet yesterday.

if you want to learn more about the U-boat wolf pack action in the Atlantic, an excellent source is a book entitled Operation Drumbeat by Michael Gannon.

several years ago, I was traveling to VA for a work assignment and grabbed it in the airport to have something to read on the plane...was fascinating to read the descriptions of life on these noisy, smelly, cramped submarines. not a glamorous life by any definition.

by coincidence, we got a day off during the week so my coworker and I booked a dive charter boat that dropped us on the wreck of a ship mentioned in the book.

the Francis E. Powell, a 7,000-ton American steam-powered tanker, was sunk by U-130 using its last torpedo. visibility was poor and there was not a lot of structure left, but we found some bulkheads, a winch, and some other random pieces.

was a memorable experience knowing how those items found their way to sea floor.

What I really want to do and I was thinking it this morning is to get with you Sera pal and do like an all-day binge-watching best war movies (your picks of course)...after we get our rides in the morning.

Great movie, but not much to it. Just one long battle scene.

I enjoyed it but feel like there has got to be a better way to pass info on the boat. Listening to those guys repeat the same stuff over and over wore me down.

I don't know enough about Navy boats to know why it's necessary.
