OK so this is a really dumb idea for a handlebar

A company called RP Designs (which now owns Ellsworth) has come up with what it calls it's "Smart-Cockpit" that, essentially, turns your handlebar(s) into an iPhone or Android.

We've already turned our cars into our phones with the same tech. Do we really, REALLY, need to turn our bikes into phones, too?

Get off my lawn.

Sorry, I'm gonna be late for the ride meetup. I need to update my handlebar firmware.

I'm not sure I'd like that much integration, but is that really so different than having a regular handlebar with the latest Garmin/Wahoo/Hammerhead computer on it?

Seems like the better analogy would be riding with your phone attached to your cockpit. I'd say their marketing blurb way overpromises:

Quote:
It enables cyclists to access their (sic) phones technology without having to take their hands off their handlebars. Navigation, performance tracker, music, head lights, etc. Individually attaching these items is a pain, sometimes having to use tape or bungee cords to attach things. Now cyclists can attach the Smart-Cockpit™ and have everything they need.
Pretty sure one hand is coming off the bars to manage that UI.
And the bolded part would imply that the bars include lights.

Yes that is silly. Plus the handlebars are hideous. Even when I rode with a computer I trained my eye to see only the speed and not pay attention to the time or miles. I hate to know the metrics when riding, only after.

Yep.

If I cared enough I would say that is really neat, but jeepers creepers, talk about planned obsolescence.

If you're just going to stare at that handlebar all ride long (like all the other people walking around) why bother even leaving home?

Just stay down in your basement (and stare at this):

That looks uncomfortable if you just sat on the seat and watched the screen, let alone actually working out wearing that headgear…….

Disregarding the fact that her, uh, helmet isn't UCI legal, how much do those things weigh? I could see myself getting a neckache if I wore one of those.

And her elbows are way too wide. Not at all aero (as if it matters).
