Nobody here worries about testicular cancer? The Varia has to have a narrow beamwidth antenna pointing behind you, but every directional antenna has a back lobe pointing in the opposite direction - pretty much right at your junk.

No other way to put it other than it’s the single most important piece of safety equipment other than my helmet. That’s for me. I won’t ride w/o mine. For all the reasons people that have one have posted.

What about your cell phone in back pocket or even on the handlebars?

I didn't read this entire thread but I'm in the camp of won't ride without my varia. I like as much information as possible wrt something coming up behind me. I find it very useful on Mtn bike trails as well. It let's me know if someone is coming up behind me.

And all the time you park it adjacent to your brain while it is broadcasting, if I think out loud about it...

Different frequency and power though. The shorter the wavelength, the more power required to penetrate skin.

Here is the FCC test summary, full validation doc is below, maybe an RF expert can chime in.

Ok. Colour me confused. So are we saying there is some potential danger having a radar within 6-8 inches of our groin?

Nope, only way is to either turn off the varia or disable it on the Garmin. I should search the ConnectIQ store to see if any solutions exist.

It seems pretty obvious that the consenting opinion is STRONGLY in support of this unit. As much as I am not a fan of Garmin, I to feel naked without the Varia (which I have been using for the past three years). I can easily get 6+ hours on a charge (I wish my Garmin head unit would do that). Yes, my second gen unit will pickup other riders if they happen to be in the line of sight but you get used to that very quickly, My only complaint is that my old ears will not always pick up the audio warnings. I've seen that the latest edition will send the audio to your phone....god forbid that Garmin would update the older series!!

With the popularity of the newer models of the varia, I wonder if garmin will reintroduce that sunglasses clip on display. But I think the battery performance of that unit is even worse.

So I returned to this thread to find out that my Varia irradiates the boys.

Swell.
