Solutions for getting tubeless sealant residue off a painted steel frame?

Had a mishap a while ago and a geyser of tubeless sealant came out of my Vittoria Corsas. I somehow overlooked the extent of the damage. Mostly to rear of the seat stay and chain stays. Any suggestions? Thanks much.

What sealant? Some are latex based.

man that sucks.. I would certainly try the safe stuff first, like maybe some citrus degreaser or some rubbing alcohol? does depend in the sealant brand probably.. maybe a good reason to have a decent layer of wax on a steal (or carbon?) frame if you run tubeless..

Latex based. Got mixed in with dirt and grime. Just have a lot on my plate and it eluded me. Muck -Off seems to have sealant specific products. Anyone use those? My LBS said that nail polish remover and soap/water and a lot of elbow grease will do the trick without harming the paint.

well, nail polish remover (acetone?) takes off nail polish, so not sure I'd want to try that on a pristine frame.. maybe if there was a really hidden spot.. I think I'd try rubbing alcohol and some elbow grease.. google what breaks down latex gloves, etc?

Yes. That’s what the LBS recommended. I’m no expert.

I’ve used microfiber towels with soapy water and a lot of elbow grease to remove completely dried sealant from a steel surly frame.

this may sound crazy, but i bet more of the same sealant would work. Usually wet liquid sealant activates the dry stuff and allows it to "rehydrate", which should allow you to wipe it off.

I'd start with isopropyl alcohol and work my way up the toxicity scale from there. WD-40, Goo Gone, acetone. If it's still there at that point...splatter paint the rest of your bike with it.

I bought this stuff sold by Silca. Didn't work worth a darn. Rubbing it off with a cloth is the only thing that works.

Try ammonia. It certainly removes latex paint. Even old dried hard paint.

This is interesting as I assumed "water" would be all one needed.

Getting it out of fabric of any kind, lord knows, but getting it off of a painted surface has been easy as pie for me.

I’d use soap and water to wash off most of the dirt and grime first, that way when you’re trying to remove the dry sealant, you’re not putting huge scratches in your paint.

Then use something specific to remove the sealant. Try a MF towel, soaked w/ 9X% isp alcohol. Maybe dab the dried sealant w/ the alcohol. Let it sit for a min and try wiping off the damp sealant.

What Angry suggested is another thing to consider using wet sealant to remove the dried stuff.

Effeto Mariposa carogna tubular glue remover is magic for almost anything sticky and is kind to surfaces. Goes on as a gel, toothpaste consistency, spread it on the area, let it sit for 12-15 hours and it goes all gummy and adheres then comes off clean with a popsicle stick and rag.
