with the wind or against
if you have a choice do you first go with the wind on the way out or against it. I have a skinny loop ride that is mostly north south this weekend so which way
(And yes the apparent wind seems to always be a head wind - especially in a loop) |

Always head into the wind for me. I’m so much stronger going home.

Take the tail wind whenever you can. Winds shift around during the day, so you can never count on the direction later in the ride.

I always go out into the wind and sail home. I live at the Jersey Shore and it get’s pretty windy down here. I usually check the surf report, as it has a section dedicated to wind direction, for those rare times when I can get tail winds both ways.

I'm buying a new house. I tell people that I love the quiet location, three-car garage, dark skies at night, and it's a short commute to work.
The real reason, the house is northeast of town, the predominant wind is from the southwest. I can ride in a southwesterly direction in the light and variable winds in the early am, and rocket home with a sweet tailwind. |

Where I live you often don't have a choice and can even have a headwind in both directions. Fun.
I have no use for the wind when riding a bike. |

In eastern Mass., the prevailing wind is from the WSW. In addition, riding west usually means increasing altitude. So most of my rides go toward the west, and go uphill into the wind on the way out, and downhill will the wind on the way back.
(By the way, this is why the Boston Marathon course is considered an "easy" marathon course - it goes west to east so it is predominately downhill with a tailwind. Although it is the oldest and most prestigious marathon, you can't set official World or US records on this course because it doesn't meet the requirements for International or US records.) |

I say it strictly depends on the smell of the folk[s] you are riding with.

Re:
I live near a couple of canyons and have to plan for wind direction changes as the temperature climbs... prefer to come home with a tail wind.

I grew up in Westwood, MA - along time ago. But I agree if have to go into the wind uphill is the way to do it.

wind haters unite
Since I'm not a sailor I have no use for the wind in most sports but especially cycling and golf.
