Not long after this ride I started selling off my road bikes and buying cross bikes (handlebars started the ride at a normal angle!). This MXL is the only roadie left and hasn't been ridden in over a year.

This is my current main squeeze.

This is a build in progress...hope to have it ready in the next few weeks.

Oooh, nice

What is this? I can't make out the name on the downtube.
It looks perfect.

What's the largest tire it will hold?

The "Softail 2" rear stays are supposedly designed to be horizontally rigid but vertically compliant. Local, small Portland company that is now owned by an Asian manuf. - Specialized killed them off with a lawsuit saying the "Stumptown" (a PDX nickname) was too close to "Stumpjumper" so they had to discontinue it.

The two articles I read said that there was no lawsuit, only an agreement. I also sounds like kenisis owned them before any dispute.

My latest gravel bike

Monster Cross frame just arrived from Black Mountain Cycles yesterday. I got as far as I could screwing parts on. I wanted this frame to fit my Bruce Gordon Rock 'n Road tires, and have low gears for steep gravel roads--thus the Sugino super-compact 44-30 crank. Now to my LBS for cabling--and checking my work. Not sure I got the headset parts on in the right order. Also, may have overtightened crank. First time builder here.

Nice BMC! The build looks almost exactly what did on mine, except I chose a triple... What brakes are you going with?

* just saw the Paul's, good choice!

Tires

The answer to my question might be dependent of where I plan to ride, but I wonder if you gravel grinders have a recommended tire size for your gravel bikes? Is 40mm enough? Is 45mm too much?

I expect the bike I'm contemplating will spend most of its time on the road, but I'd like the ability to run a larger tire for occasional gravel road adventures.

All depends.

This last fall I rode 60+ miles of the Almanzo 100 route in southern Minnesota.

The roads were hard as a rock in most places, so very few spots where a 40 would make sense.

So a tire like a Speed Max, Grifo, or even the narrower Almanzo or Eroica tires would be great choices.

Now, we did 47 miles two weeks ago in the mud, snow and ice and the Nobby Nics on my Fargo could have been wider. That was a royal mess.
