I finally took the plunge!

Until 9 years ago when I bought my first fatbike, I'd been strictly a road cyclist. My fatty exposed me to a whole other world of singletrack trail riding and I fell in love with it. I've considered getting a mountain bike in the years since but I worried that I'd only go faster through the trails and that may not be wise. But then I began thinking about how much more control I'd have at those faster speeds with both front and rear suspension and a bike meant for that kind of riding.

And with that thought in mind, I pulled the trigger on my first MTB today! I had my heart set on a Trek Fuel EX 9.7 and amazingly enough, there was one at a LBS. They also had an Orbea Oiz M20 in my size for comparison. I took them both out to the lot (the trails are muddy and closed here in MN) and jumped a few curbs and also found some speed bumps to ride over. It's all I had. After 3 separate turns on each bike, the decision was a no-brainer for me. I chose the Orbea. Better components and more than 3 lbs (1.92 stones) lighter for nearly the same price.

I should mention that there's quite a wait if one has to order either bike from the manufacturer. Trek is out to the end of the year while my Orbea would've had me waiting until late September.

I was just out in the garage sitting on it like a little kid with a new bike. New Bike Day is fun!

I agree. I'm very pleased with the weight savings of the Orbea vs the Trek. A Trek of similar weight would've cost me at least another $1500.

Nice. How’s the fit on Fizik shoes relative to other brands? I like the look of them.

Well, that's a bit interesting. I have a pair of Shimano RP200, which seem a bit big, so I created a thread trying to understand how Fizik and Shimano shoes fit relative to each other. The consensus was that I should size down a bit going to Fizik.

The Shimanos are 43, so I tried the Overcurve R5 in 42. Way too small, notably in forefoot width. By then the coronavirus had disrupted just about everything, and cycling shoes were one of millions of items that became hard to find. It wasn't a big deal for me since the Shimanos worked OK, even if they might be a tad too large.

Recently Fizik seems to have received a huge shipment from its manufacturers, and everything's back in stock. I ordered 42.5 from Wiggle and 43 direct from Fizik.

The 42.5 were a bit short in length, so I'm sending them back and keeping the 43. Bottom line, I'm ended up wearing the same exact size in both Shimano RP200 and Fizik Tempo Overcurve R5.

Here's the original thread.

I like their looks as well, and they're $150 USD instead of $400. My feet are pretty ordinary, so I can probably wear almost anything after adjusting for fit differences.

So since the Shimanos in 43 were too big, then sizing down for Fizik and also ending up with a 43 seems about right.
Edit: Nevermind, I have it backwards. A shimano 42.5 might have been your ideal size, so a Fizik in 43 means you sized up from Shimano.

Eh, maybe Shimano 43 is fine, and they're not too big after all, even though they feel like it. It could be that I'm an idiot. Who knows?
