Seven ti/carbon mix frames - FD sleeve needed?
Seven has a bunch of ti/carbon mix frames that have a carbon seat tube. To those who have had or have one now - do you need to use some kind of sleeve to protect the carbon around the front derailleur clamp?
One benefit of the Serotta Ottrott design is that it had a ti seat tube that could easily handle a FD clamp without worries. Thanks for any info. |

use a carbon FD clamp to spread the load. Parlee makes a $$$ one, but this one also works just fine.

I don't know the layup of what seven uses, but I've never had an issue with a front derailleur clamp on a carbon seat tube. On the other hand, I've seen numerous steel seat tubes deformed by front derailleur clamps.

You need a sleeve or shim. I've worked for a Seven dealer and unfortunately if you're not in the know it's easy to forget the sleeve and just clamp a 31.8 mm FD on there since the naked tube diameter sort of matches a 31.8. That's wrong though! Use the sleeve and a 34.9 mm FD. Seven makes one but I believe any generic one works just as well.

As said, Seven makes a sleeve just for this.
It's a 2 piece shim similar to a handlebar shim. I needed one and Seven wasn't answering the phones or responding to emails. I had to go through a local Seven dealer and it took more than a month to get. I wonder if a 35 -> 31.8 handlebar shim would work and be easier to come by? |

Use the shims provided by Seven. The carbon front derailleur clamps aren't exactly the right size and will cause you a good deal of frustration if you go that route, and in my experience, will never work great.
