Let me guess....none of the fine folks gathered here watch porn on the internet?
And your family and close friends, how many of them watch internet porn? None, right?

That's curious given the immense volume of porn served up daily on the internet (or so I hear, because I personally would never know, of course).
Who's consuming all that porn?

Now similar question: Who eats Twinkies and Ding Dongs every day and washes it down with a few Cokes or Mountain Dews?
Anyone?
As a physician who takes care of people in an area with high rates of obesity I can tell you it certainly isn't anyone I have ever asked.
Yet every couple of days they come and unload a semi truck with Twinkies and Ding Dongs at the local grocery store.
They get that unloaded quickly so the Pepsi truck loaded with 8 different soda varieties can unload, followed closely by the Doritos truck.
Where is all of that junk food going? Is the grocery store throwing it all away every other day and just replacing it with new stuff?
Why is the spinach section of the store so small and the Doritos aisle so big?

Nobody watches internet porn, and nobody eats multiple meals a day from the Doritos aisle but those shelves keep getting emptied.

Do you really believe that anyone is telling you what they're really eating? Where is it all going?

Maybe microbiome and thyroid issues and absorption differences account for 2% of the obesity in our population.
The rest of it is from eating massive volumes of crap food and not exercising.
No more complicated explanations need apply.
This ^ in a nutshell.

Consequently, that perpetuates the whole health/diet industrial complex. Which I'm a part of. The disclaimer is that I don't train fat loss clients (it never works as the main motivation for exercise) so my hands are "clean" in that regard.
Well at 6'2" and 150#, I consider my self extremely fit. Im sure my 3-6 hours a day of Zone 3-5 exercise is beyond what most of you do.

A lot of you rail against calorie intake/burn, but I'll bet 99% on this forum don't have a problem of trying to eat more than you can burn. Your probably content riding 6-7k a year and maybe running 1-2k and think your fit...there is whole other world of 60+ year olds who do this on an annual basis.

Come to Northern Colorado and I'll introduce you to a whole group of seniors that do this in there sleep.

Thank you!

But with it being so simplistic as this it can't be studied to death to make the issue seem so much more complicated..

I must have missed the HTFU responses, but I'm old and that **** doesn't bother me.
Things will get better for you younger folks, my wife and I have children and grandchildren and are able to spend as much time as we want with them, even though the closest ones are 1400 miles from us.
We decided that after 30 years, home ownership wasn't for us anymore, too much wasted time cleaning the pool, raking leaves, cutting grass, shoveling snow, etc!
Renting a townhome now means we can ride, run, backpack etc everyday and hour of the year!
5000 miles of loaded touring
2500 miles running
100 nights of free camping(bike touring, backpacking, distance running)

We don't train for the sake of training, everything we do is for the experience of living!

Our biggest mistake was waiting to retire in our late 50's and to start living that late in life!!!!

I should've phrased things more carefully. Apologies. My point was the vast majority of people characterized by the BMI chart as overweight (not including obesity) may still be quite healthy and fit.

Our genetic evolutionary response is on a geologic time scale relative to how fast the microbes have changed. What we eat, the medicine we take, etc. all impacts our microbes, which in turn change how our bodies work.

When you compare the microbiome of people in the western world with indigenous peoples in areas with limited western influence, they are dramatically different. Indigenous peoples are believed to represent what our microbiome "should be" from a host-microbe evolution perspective.
Thanks for your contributions to the thread. It's a fascinating subject. I look forward to picking your brain at a later date.

"Should be" or used to be?

One would think that the change happened in response to changes in the host environment.

What would happen if someone could do a study where for half the participants they waived a magic wand and changed the microbiome back to what it was, say, 2000 (or whatever) years ago? What would happen over time to those people compared to those where the micorbiome was not reset? (same "modern" diet for all participants)
