Thats a tough one. Im leaning toward measuring improvement, but im most interested in keeping it interesting and not getting bored of it over time.

If you ride solo a lot of the time like me, try the TACX Trainer app.
No social, no group rides, no gamification, but does give you legit power, HR, calorie burn numbers, etc. To me, very much like taking a ride but my choice of several hundred locations: France, Italy, Belgium, Gaiwan, etc. Good roadfeel too, if you like that kind of stuff.

I know you weren't asking me, but it's a good introspective question..

For me, I think the overall is I know I need to burn calories to not get too fat.. a very close second is upping my fitness on the road.. so I use Zwift as I really like the gamer interface (I'm an XBOX guy) and it gives me plenty of options if I just want at chill ride to spin the legs or something more structured like a workout.. maybe I'll get into races one day..

or maybe i'm dreaming...

because that would be pretty awesome. i have a series of local ride routes that i'd love to record and simply be able to replicate for measured power output (for a given speed, grade, etc) via a "smart" trainer.
I'm pretty sure all recent (last five years) Wahoo element or Garmin Edge bike computers can do that from any course you have in your library. Just pair it to your trainer and it sends grade targets.

I Zwifted for a while, but didn't really get the whole virtual ride in a group thing.

Also are people really typing out messages while riding?

I resigned myself to Trainerroad and catching up on TV shows/YouTube content.

Wow, you ride outside.

I ride inside and get a better workout. I also nordic ski and get a better workout. I also Skimo and get a better workout.

I always love the "I ride outside in the winter" responses.

can't remember the brand. are they still around? or is there anything comparable today?
Check out Veloreality. Small company in Canada, very nice 1080 and 4k video of most of the great European climbs, some neat stuff in western US. Detects trainer via ant and synchs. Can also reduce grades if you want-effectively giving you a lower gear.

You SHOULD love the "I ride outside in the winter" responses.

You should also respect them, for they are harder than you.

Being in California currently, I don't not ride outside because of weather, it's more about daylight for me.. I'm in a commuter van 2-3 hrs a day and by the time I get home and get around to riding, the daylight is often already fading.. so the trainer works well for those weeknights where I can't get out on the bike right after I get home from work. This is even more important as we lose daylight hours (and will be even more when I move to Oregon next year I think)

100%, it's part of what makes zwifting social and tolerable (for me), gives it the feel of being on real group ride, I will say, I am not sitting there tapping on my laptop, but using the companion app on the phone.
