Survived a deer collision this morning
I had a scary one this morning. I was out doing my usual early morning ride. Was coming descending down into a closed to cars road at about 25mph (have done this over 50 times at least). Saw a small fawn cross and head into the woods. About 5 seconds later I see the momma deer crossing. It slowed down, I slow down a bit (to 25mph according to strava) and I decide to keep going thinking since she was stopped and would allow me to pass. Boy was I wrong! She ran directly into my left thigh, somehow I was able to keep the bike upright.
Super scary and fortunate! My left thigh is pretty tender, need to count my blessings on this one. I got home and noticed some fir on my tights. Think next time i'll stop to let the momma reach her pack. One of those crazy moments in life where you reflect and realize how much worse it could have been had it been a split second earlier or even a couple inches lower. Glad you are okay!
Two things to remember about deer, and I always remind myself when I see one... 1. Deer be stoopid. 2. There's always more than one.

Glad you're ok and stayed upright. I see deer regularly and give them a W I D E berth always. Same with when I was riding out west in the mountains... sheep man. Once had to drop from 80kph to zero in no time cuz a flock were standing in the middle of the road. |

I've actually had a few encounters with deer. In my case solo critter. Nothing too close, but certainly close enough.
I do ride back roads and such a lot, more to have less cars is why I choose those types of routes. I find car less predictable than the deer. Not really, just thought I joke that a bit up.

not sure which is scarier...
dumb-as-a-mud fence deer or kamikaze squirrels. |

Glad you're OK.
Twice on the drive in the parking lot at my old work place a pair have crossed my path. They're big! |

I don’t know how you kept upright hitting a large animal at 25. Glad you did though.
I was mountain biking in Park City one year, ripping down a single track, when all of the sudden, stampede of 30-40 head of elk crashing through the trees, across the trail about 10 yards in front of me. I stopped and it felt like the whole trail was shaking. I cringe to think what would’ve happened if I had been 2 seconds faster. |

Had a squirrel bounce off my front wheel the other day. Crazy rodents.

Watch out for Turkeys too! They have a bad case of the stoopid and travel in large groups too, I am seeing an awful lot of them right now. |

haha - yup - I too was going to add them to the stupid list (and they can fly - 3 big steps and this huge bird got airborne). But they are aggressive also.

Old upstate NY saying (relative to automobiles): "There are those who have hit a deer, and those who will." I've had two deer-vehicle collisions and several near-collisions on bikes. I've seen the results of two deer-aircraft collisions (deadly for the deer, much $$$ for the aircraft owner). Very glad the OP is safe and uninjured!

Great save! Was going up a hill and a male deer ran out in front of me. I stopped easily then it began to snort at me. I went down the hill looking back to make sure I was clear. Last time i hit one with my car there were seven more behind her.
