The Japanese automakers have no idea what they are doing design-wise. Look at a Toyota/Honda/Nissan/Subaru next to the German/American/Korean competition. It's sad since they produce an otherwise good car, but the designs they are pumping out are absolutely dreadful.

My impression has been that Acura wins the prize for ugly but that new prius in the link is maybe the new winner.

OOH! That evil Catfish look I've been dreaming of...Thanks, Toyota!

Just think what a fender-bender will cost you in that thing.

No kidding. Seems like more molded plastic panels are what they think the US wants. Surprising even more so since many design studios for the mentioned car makers are US based.

Yuck

I'm actually a fan of Lexus' new design language for their stuff. Started with the LF-A and has trickled down through the Toyota range. At least they're trying to make some kind of statement rather than the beige boxes of yore.

Lots of product in the new car marketplace. The car makers must have taken the tack that they will do anything to stand out in a crowded marketplace. So they chose to go ugly, 'cos nobody would think to do that - zig when all the competition zags. In meetings they didn't call it 'ugly', they called it 'thematically galvanizing' design.

Every design studio working for every car manufacturer came upon this genius at the same time.

I like the way our 2010 Prius looks. Sure, it's an econobox that costs a lot of money. We have a 2014 that isn't that great looking, but the new one is definitely worse. They need to keep the designers away from auto shows
