It was a Homer Hilsen. Nice looking bike. No more photos.

What about Joe Remi? Surely he was there too, hanging out with Grant.

In his latest Blahg post, Grant refers to the upcoming Gus Boots Willsen and it's accompanying brochure as "swan songs", which doesn't sound encouraging for Rivendell's future.

They're going to be just fine. There's an incredibly strong market for $100 cup and cone BBs, new production triple (square taper) cranks, new bikes with threaded steerers, and a place for tips on how to make an atrocious looking hobo-pump peg that will not at all look incongruous on your nice lugged frame.

If you love novelty, these bikes never get old. I think they're beautiful, but wouldn't buy one, as disc brakes are my thing going forward.

That said, making a rim-braked MTB just seems unnecessary when discs are plentiful, reliable and affordable these days (think modern Deore hydros). I don't think modernizing in this way would compromise the vision of Riv too much. Ha ha - just writing this makes me chuckle - I guess that is the point of this company

I agree with some of that but really introducing a cup and cone bb for $100? I get that the 1/4" ball bearings are better than smaller tiny ones you get in today's cartridge bearings. But really for square taper cranks only? First, if people want cup and cone bbs, there's tons of Campy, Shimano, Suntour and other mfrs bbs out there already. It's not like this is a new standard.

Further, if Grant really wanted to be innovative, why not also introduce a cup and cone version for external bb that a lot, if not most cranks sold today come with. Yes, it is more maintenance than a cartridge, but like cup and cone hubs that are still sold by Campy and Shimano, it works well.

Further, then there's the lugs. Sorry, but since Grant has taken Rivendell frames to Taiwan, you can see how he's trying to cut cost by offering ugly lugs! Instead of offering interesting lugs and nice fork crowns like these:

Now we get ugly lugs like these:

Grants new cup & cone BBs are just the thing I need to install
my Stronglight 49D cranks in a 1950s Ellis Briggs.
Actual Stronglight BBs are extinct.

I understand his desire to build 50 year bikes, Deore hydros
will 40 generations back in 50 years, don't think the seals will
be working then. I have LAM & GB brakes from the 40s and 50s
that work just fine, with new compression-less cables and KoolStop
pads. It is very cool that I can use a DA lock ring to hold the 12 spline
cog on a Sturmey AF hub, from 1949.

Long live, the long lived bike.
