Recommend best video for hydraulic housing trim and bleed
So I have good quality SRAM and Shimano bleed kits and four bikes that need cables shortened and/or I'm switching brake levers. On two of them, I've settled on a build with stem quite a bit lower and a touch shorter than the previous owners and so the cables are a bit long and in the way. Another is a TREK mtb that cam new with ridiculously long hydro housing. I may still take that one back to the TREK store, but I generally do all my own work and so figure it's a fine time to expand & practice my skills.
So...who has a go-to video that does a good job showing how to trim and bleed hydro housing? |

Im curious about this as well but mainly for how to do the lever side of things. Ive done the caliper side a couple times(on campy 12), and its fairly easy with a hose cutter and needle driver. Have never attached a hose at the lever side though.

I bought the Park tool for trimming the housing and inserting the barb. Probably a bit overkill - this is a pretty simple job and cheaper tools should work fine.
FWIW, installing new Shimano levers and calipers recently, I merely trimmed the housing, installed the olive and barb, and everything worked perfectly without any bleeding necessary. If your parts are not pre-bled, you'll have to bleed afterwards, but if you're familiar with that, nothing on the cutting side makes the job any harder. |

I’d read the manual for each brake and watch a bunch of videos for each.
Different mechanics will have different tips and tricks for a specific brake setup. I ended up with the SRAM cutter and driver even though I haven’t had to use the driver yet due to the brakes I’ve done so far using threaded barbs. I absolutely despise how some of the manuals have everything mixed together in ten languages which means something that could fit on one page ends up on ten pages and you probably have dirty rubber gloves on for all this. Lever side is the same as the caliper side, unless it’s a banjo, same bard and olive, but has a different screw. Don’t stripe the threads on the plastic lever is my best advice. I cut my hose with a razor and pound the barb in with a plastic mallet.

Most of the things I linked below are for road. But you can find the mountain stuff with a little work.
SRAM Cutting and barb/compression fitting install: https://youtu.be/OnyRSfcZE78?si=mB_NfytKriyE--Hx SRAM Bleed Procedure (dot fluid): https://youtu.be/wJI5SEIc5-o?si=Hg_mfQboSDjy-ra6 Shimano (a fairly good road line cut video - he doesn’t really bleed the brakes though): https://youtu.be/Xlil6gOJXUc?si=mGz1tUKhk_3dAdJw Shimano has a ton of videos as well, but only available on their employee/mechanic site. But the instructions on their website are good too.
