Di2 Pass key reset dilemena

My Tarmac SL8 build has come to a halt because I don't have the pass key to the Ultegra RD. I tried all the stock codes 000000, 111111, 123456 and none of them work. I bought it used off Ebay and contacted the seller but they have not responded yet. On 11 speed it is possible to reset it using the E-Tube app, but 12 speed requires Shimano SM-PCE02 Di2 PC Linkage Device which costs around $250. I called around to local shops and they all said to bring it in and maybe we can do it. I would have to leave it for a few days to a week.
I am thinking if I don't hear back from the seller I might initiate a return since I was sold something not usable.
I the mean time I can learn how to install and fill the hydraulic brakes.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

This reminds me of the 90s when OEM car radios had a similar code, and they would be a brick without the code if you ever lost power to them for a prolonged period or disconnected them from the car.

I can confirm that the passkey can be reset using eTube and the proper PC interface. My shop needed to do this to one of my bikes when they couldn't get in touch with me.

It takes all of a couple of minutes so your shops are either clueless or just being lazy (likely both).

I was wondering if this was about the recently announced hack. I didn't actually see what that entailed, but if hackers can control your derailleurs maybe they can break into them

I think the people I talked to on the phone where sales and not mechanics so I was getting vague non-answers. Shops here are are really busy with service.

New problem

The Trek Store came to the rescue and reset it.
Had to drive to the one further away since they could do it right away.
I heard back from the Ebay seller and he said he thought it was 000000 or 123456 but those did not work.
I can see all the devices now in Etube but when I press the shift buttons nothing happens. The rear derailleur is bolted to the frame and the front just hanging.
Does there need to be chain tension on it for it to shift?
The shifters are 105 and derailleurs Ultegra but I read that should work.
Could be the rear derailleur is toast?
Thanks for any suggestions.

I think I may have found the problem.
The battery has three ports and a wire has to be connected to middle port.
I randomly used the other two ports. Should have read the instructions.
Going to try it tomorrow.

Never had these issues with sram

Shimano 11 speed di2 invented a market we never knew we needed. 12 speed from them has not been inspiring. They've lost their way

Sram is way more universal and backwards compatible 11 speed and 12 speed. Infinitely way less parts to boot. Simple

Pidcock had a shift cable on his mtb when he somehow managed to win the Olympics

Well changing the wire to the middle port did not get it working.
I am at a loss to why it is not working. Since the RD is used maybe it is bad but it shoes up in the Etube app and LED functions properly.
One is that the Etube is identifying the shifters as being Ultegra model but they are 105. Not sure if this matters.

I have another idea. Since the shifters are wireless I looked up pairing and they do have to be paired. I think I am seeing the wrong model in the Etube app because the RD was paired with Ultegra shifters. I think maybe I have to unpair and pair to the new shifters.

If you are trouble shooting, I would pull the rear lever off the bars and connect direct to the battery by cable. Simplyfy and go to basics, once you know the rear derailleur is functional, go after correcting your wireless issues.

I love this forum because I am always learning new things. Today I learned I will never use electronic shifting...

Not sure if you've solved this but it is likely a pairing issue. Anytime you introduce something new, that's always the first to try. I can also confirm that using Ultegra derailleurs and 105 shifters is fine. There is nothing you have to do. When you plug it in, etube recognizes is (assuming all is paired, plugged in properly, etc). Shift away.

Finally got it working .
I had to unpair the previous owners shifters and then pair with my new shifters.
Yay
