Bike Upgrade Plan

Currently I am riding a 2005 Trek 1200 (below) (triple w/ ISIS BB

) with the intent on racing next year. Would the most economical plan be to buy upgrades and put them on the 2005 Trek 1200 and then eventually put them on a newer and nicer frame once I am an established rider OR to go out and drop the 2500 that I have set to be my limit on a complete used bike? I was thinking if I keep buying parts that will work on a future frame I buy I will always have a spare bike to beat around in the rain and winter(Trek 1200).

I assumed the most bang for my buck upgrading the Trek 1200 I could get would be rims since I am rocking the stock Alex Rims AT 450s. Converting the 3x9 to a 2x11 may not be a bad idea as well but not a performance upgrade.

Sell it and get a new bike. $2,500 gets you a lot of bike these days.

Buy used Caad10, keep Trek as a beater, and have $1500 left over.

I just saw a guy buy a Cannondale Evo HM with DA brand new for 2500 cash. With a warranty. From a shop. Caad12's with Ultegra 1300.

get a CAAD 10 frame and carbon wheels with used ultergra drivetrain. keep in mind any moving object (wheels, cranks, chain, cassette) on the bike needs to be light. should be able be pretty competitive with $2500 budget. or get the caad 12 mentioned above and swap the wheels.

IMO you are better just swapping that trek for a caad, even a old caad with threaded BB. There's so many old high end bikes moving around that you can get for like 500 bucks a frame. Just to start legendary bikes in aluminum you a Caad... De rosa Merak and planet... in carbon you have the TCR 0/1/2/3... same frame different components. have you ever wonder you dont see many of those for sale? Is not because they suck.

IMO for that budget you have you can get a really nice frame and with the cooperation of the guys from the forums if you nail one of those frames I was mentioning you could get a really nice high end bike. Even at ebay you can find good stuff for less than you think.

Thanks for all the responses. Sounds like everyone really loves the Caad 10's. I am assuming no one mentioned any of the brands you see in le Tour(Trek, Specialized or Cervelo) due to their high costs? Since I have about 5 months to shop, what would be a good price for a used stock Caad 10?

$2500 and some patience can get you on a super race bike! Just post a wtb in the classifieds and you will end up with the nicest bike you've ever ridden. The other route is to check around the lbs and see what kind of deals are available on closeouts. Giant usually starts giving away tcr models at years end to make room for the new models. Cannondale tends to as well. Don't know what size bike you ride, but velotrack has a nos Cannondale supersix high mod f/f on the classifieds for a pretty solid price

you mention racing so yeah, caad9/10/12 go right to the top of the list.
i'd also put the allez smartweld and giant defy frames up there too. or if you want carbon, used supersixes and tarmacs are all over craigslist.

if you're patient and stalk your local craigslist, you can typically find a great bike for under your budget. but for sure, don't put too much effort into upgrading your trek.

I am a size 54. Now that buying components for my current bike that I would eventually put on a different frame seems like a bad idea, the long stalk for a Craiglist bike may begin. I am assuming that will be much cheaper than buying a frame and component by component separately? Whats the report on Pinarello and Ridley lower end bikes?

fwiw, i get email blasts from my locals shops for the 2016 cannondales and specialized as they were clearing space for next year's models. it may be worth heading down there and seeing what's available at the store. it's a good time to buy now or wait for holiday sales to save some money while still supporting the shop.
