If you watch the videos of the instances where a big gap quickly opened up it looks like the competitors were either extremely tired or not wanting to take up the chase. Most to the time they sort of sat up a little. I can't imagine how difficult it is to try to catch up to a world-class time trial specialist who speeds up to "do their thing" many kilometers from the finish.
Who knows. Maybe someday someone will make a deathbed confession. To be honest I'm still shell-shocked that Armstrong and his team where almost all doping, so in my mind being naive is more of a necessary self-preservation of my idealization of the cycling sport as a whole.
You have to admit, it was pretty amazing watching Fabian at his best.

Over time there have been protocols developed that allow the athletes to test within the allowable parameters for all of the banned substances. A motor isn't that, a motor in the bike is binary. It's either there or not, if it's there and they're testing the bikes, your career as a professional cyclist is over. So, idiot.

Its a rhetorical question on the nature of cheating, but thanks for helping me understand the difference between the two. Maybe you didn’t get the memo on etiquette?

Ummm, I was referring to those crossing finish lines with motors in bikes. Thanks for leaping to conclusions?

I'm just going to stir the pot a little bit, but why didn't Fabs directly address his peculiar hand movement? there are 2 videos which started the controversy where he clearly makes an unexplained movement with his right hand that is not a shift just before his attacks. what is he doing? and if he was innocent, why wouldn't he want to adress that specific movement with a perfectly good explanation of what he was doing? instead, he just claims that his legs were the motor. if that were me and I was completely innocent, I would address the point of contention (the odd hand movement) and shut the controversy down once and for all. the fact that he doesn't directly address this speaks volumes. it's like the Jiffy bag- no one seems to what it was and there's no explanation given.

When ridiculous and outlandish allegations are made...it best to just ignore them instead of drawing attention to the person making them. After all, it is a reaction that is being sought from the accuser. Ignoring the accuser deprives them of the attention they seek.

Because it's not worth giving more air space to.

The underpants gnome theory of his motor usage is baffling.

So one of the most notable classics riders of his generation decides to use a motor. Yet doing something clearly against the rules, he and his mechanic are sloppy enough to not mount the switch in a way that can't be activated discreetly and must use a weird hand motion. A motion that seems to indicate a switch that, yanno, people could see.

And did this knowing that as someone at the tip of the spear of the race, cameras will be on him at all times, followed by all sorts of race motos and thousands of fans along the way. But still thought the motor would be worth the risk of sloppy implementation.

So it's either that, or when you're going hard in a six hour one day race, you make weird, innocuous movements sometimes because you're breathing out your ears and getting beat to pieces by a wagon path called a road.

Anyone who believes the former, there's no convincing them of their Zapruder film level of conspiracy about it or the sheer lunacy. So why give it more oxygen and look like he's protesting too much about it?

I would guess that FC commenting on this does nothing but help the sales of PG's book.

I think the UCI (and a lot of other sports organizations) learned a lot from the Lance Armstrong debacle---let 'em cheat or risk losing millions/billions.

Fabs has both hands on the tops of his bars with Leukemans behind. He reaches with his rt hand to his shifter and it's clearly not a shift. what is that? who does that on the cobbles? the only reason to do that movement is if you are shifting and he is not shifting there. I've raced for over 10 years and I would never do that unless I was shifting. I'm not comparing myself to Fabian, but what exactly is he doing? i don't buy the random oxygen deficit explanation movement because anyone under severe oxygen deficit is not going to make any unnecessary movements at all- full stop.
