29 frame for gravel: wolf tooth 1x chainring vs front derailleur 2x

I am thinking about building up a 29 frame for a gravel bike. That way I can run full mountain tires. up to 29x2.4

Should I run a double crank or use a Wolf tooth 1x chainring?

Would a road crank with Wolf tooth 1x chainring get chain rub?

Could a Shimano 105 crank and front derailleur even fit on the frame and the chainline not rub?

The Salsa Fargo uses a Deore front shifter and Deore 36/26 M6000 crankset. But it has 2.6 wide tires.

I know it is hard to predict chain line without the frame. Sorry for the question.

Thanks

Do you need 2.4 tires for your gravel?

105 crankset won't fit, you can totally do a double on most frames but 1x is really nice on a mountain bike. Different frames have different chainring acceptances.

+ not all frames have a way to accept front derailleurs, looks like the frame shown has a stop though on the seat tube

I love the 1x on my MTB, but if you're going to be riding this bike on gravel roads (i.e. lots of seated pedaling and cadence/right gear is important to you) I'd think about something like a 40-28 or 39-26 double. You can probably find all the range you need with a modern MTB cassette, but you might find yourself between gears on s 1x. Remember that bigger tires increase your gear inches. As stated above, make sure the frame can accept a FD - many current MTB frames don't.

If you run a 36 with a 1x12 you may be surprised

Not really a dearth of front derailleur options or other things 2x with current mtb offerings if you want the nicer things. There's still stuff out there but the market is shrinking. You might be 10 or 9 speed

Going 29er for descending?

My commuter bike is a 1x11. It is a shimano hub, so the small cog is 11 tooth. It has 34 tooth chainring. With a little downslope, I am spun out.

Building up a 29er because I want to ride the occasional light mountain biking.

Bottom bracket size

BB Type : BSA English Thread 73mm , BB30 Available

Will a 105 crank mount to that BB size?

No, a 105 crank needs a 68mm shell.

Compact chainrings probably won’t clear anyway. Most 2x MTB frames max out by that 39-40t range.

Thanks for all the input

I love the paceline forum.

I found an XT crank and a 38 chainring. I will go 1x11

Thanks all.

A 38 maybe too large, more than likely. Also, what is the rear wheel spacing? If its boost, you may need to rethink.
