This is a good way to think of it.
I have a 1x (44T) road bike that is missing the climbing ring because there isn't that kind of climbing nearby. It's what I ride when I am doing solo road rides at my solo cadence and speed or road riding in the rain.

For faster group rides, my RSL is equipped with a 53/39 double and a 12-28 because cruising in the 53T is sustainable in a fast group, and we have a social roll out in the small ring. I prefer 1x for all other riding.
