DIY Wheel fork hack

This is my old Yakima wheel fork. I fashioned an “extension” so I could carry a 29er mtn wheel. I can’t remember why I ended up buying a Thule system when I already had a bunch of old Yakima stuff. The hose clamps worked great though. I think I’ve got close to a 1000 miles of freeway speed driving and my front wheel is still here.

You could probably drill that square tubing pretty easily and install long bolts to secure it a little more. But with only a wheel in there, the stresses are prob pretty low.

I’m a big do it yourself type of person and commend the effort.
I would feel better using square u-bolts over the metal pipe clamp setup you’re using. The wheel is certainly moving a lot in the wind and the metal pipe clamps you’re using are not only thin, but designed for circular applications. I would avoid drilling holes in the square stock of the Yakima rack. Seems like a rust haven in the making to me.

I hadn’t thought about u-bolts. With luck, the threading on them might even match the wingnuts that originally came with the wheel fork. The bike attachment on the mini-skinny seemed like an afterthought. But it worked out and I used it to carry another bike plus a bunch of camping gear. I picked up a Colman 2 burner right before my trip. Made in 1979, some scratches, but never lit.

it appears that way, but it does work well. i replaced the janky QR it came with with an good shimano internal cam QR and instead of the silly strap it comes with i use a niteize gear wrap thing to hold the rear wheel down.

i've hauled a ton of stuff with the basket.
