I descended Hawks yesterday. The upper section is a bit more washed out from earlier storms. The last half mile is currently in great shape.

I spent a long time riding D2 area roads on 28mm. Then jumped to 34mm. Now I am on 650b - 47mm Terrene - Elwood's. They suit me well for mixing different road and trail surfaces in these parts.

I rode the 180k last year on 32mm Gravelking slicks, it was totally fine even in the rain. I thought those were a great tire for the faster road descents. Something like a Schwalbe G-One Speed in 30mm would be a good choice as well. My gravel bike currently has 38mm Schwalbe G-One Allrounds and I think they're way too much tire for what D2R2 is.

Sounds like the evolution of gravel riding for a lot of us. I started with 32 700 for and have been on 650b 47 or 48 for the last few years. As has been said, founder Sandy W recommended 28 tires for years.

I rode D2 on 700x27-28c for a few years, then took the plunge for 650x42 for the past two years.

This year will be 700x35, which has proven to be my "goldilocks" tire.

Even on Hawks or Albany, or that short extra loop that seems more like a semi-dry creek than any kind of intentionally developed road - Just on the edge of Guilford - You know the one I mean, right?

I love the trip down Hawks every year! It let's me know I'm almost done!!!

My tire history there, going all the way back to year one. Three years on 650 x 38's, then three or four on 700 x 32's, followed by four or five on 700 x 35's. Then came the SJ years so either 26 x 2.0 or 1.75.
I like the volume for traction, comfort and flat resistance. NEVER have flated @ D2R2.

Ungh so went to change it my rear derailleur for a rx8000 and figured out what's wrong with my rear wheel. It's essentially tacoed. Good thing I have another wheelset.

Guess I'll install the 34 cassette on this wheelset and swap over tires etc. Don't like the rotors because they get too hot though. Never switched these to ice rotors because intended for these to be commuter wheels.

Also gonna try out the Shockstop stem.

10 day forecast has the weather looking perfect!

Unfortunately I'm flying to Seattle tomorrow and back Friday evening, so it's looking like a jet-laggy morning for me Saturday.

who's ready to rock some franklin county gravel?

if you see me in a zank jersey on this thing, i'll be fighting sleep and likely a hangover, say hello!

You were on 650b back in the day? cool.

I had flats each of the first two years in, I swear, the exact same spot. Cant name the road though. 700 x 32 I think. Since then three tandem years 650b 42-47 or with no flats. Back on the single bike 650b x 48.

As Angry put it, the weather is looking mighty fine. No rain, not that hot, not cold.

We are still deciding btw the mystery and the 100k. Probably will be mystery since we have always done the mystery since they introduced it and my buddy wants to keep the tradition.
