Southern VT Overnighter Late Spring/Summer?
So I moved to the Putney area in November and havent ridden my bike since I got here...looking to change that as soon as the weather permits.
I was thinking this route might be a fun summer overnighter for whoever might be interested. Any interest? https://bikepacking.com/routes/roundabout-brattleboro/ No date(s) in mind at the moment, just getting antsy/excited for better weather ha. My cabin is about 2 miles off the route so I was going to suggest starting/ending here (plenty of space for parking/camping). Lemme know if you have any thoughts/ideas! THis looks rad. I prob would not be in good shape enough at beginning of spring but hopefully later on. I bet Angryscientist would be down for some of this too.
Also big up to Joe Cruz to get some good rides on bikepacking.com in the north east, we need more! |

Quite interested if my schedule allows it.
We also might be able to set up a two-day Winchendon - Putney loop, starting at my place and heading to yours and back. Not on road/dirt/trails quite as nice as those, but still... |

Interested.
That looks like a 3 day ride for me. Maybe 2 days at max fitness but not early in the season. |

Glad to see so much I interest!
I only suggested doing it as a 2-day because it could potentially fit onto any old weekend, 3-day would be fine by me as well but obviously that would be harder for folks to attend, particularly if you're driving in from NJ/NY/ME. I guess my idea for it was a 2-day mini D2R2, fully self supported, camping in GMNF. The route from my cabin would be around 134mi total (it eliminates going through brattleboro). Also convenient that 2 of the possible camp sites fall directly at the distance midpoint of the loop. I'm planning on riding it myself ASAP and tweaking as needed leading up to the actual group ride. Ultimately, Im planning on exploring/building other similar 1/2/3 day routes in the area with the long term plan of hosting several small organized bikepacking (overnight) events throughout the summer/fall if people are interested. I dunno about you guys but the fact that D2R2 only happened but once a year was both the best and worst thing about it ha. So yea, glad to hear there is some interest! The 25 miles of it south of Stratton Arlington Rd is an area that I am eager to ride. It looks good as a 2-day route, partly for the weekend thing, and partly because a long day in the saddle can cover a lot of ground even at a moderate pace. Starting from Putney reaches camps at good spots. That one of the description features and pictures talks about "mud sections, ruts and rocks" suggests that waiting until late May or so might be beneficial. I don't really know. Though, it all depends on how wet this spring is, right? I'm curious what you'll find if you scout it. More generally, I like your idea of scouting/hosting short bikepacking trips. It's a real challenge getting my pals to commit to that kind of adventure, and finding a situation for coordinate short trips with like-minded folks would be huge, for me at least. Also, lmk if you or anyone is up for a big one-day ride closer to Manchester....could be 2 also.
or a huge 2-3 day of Bayley Hazen to Missisquoi RT to Smuggs Notch to Montp-WellR RT... or I have other bad ideas... |

No bikecamping gear, so in for a long one day ride.
Glad to see you back on the east coast! Thought you might park the bauvan somewhere in the southwest. |

Definitely interested. That 134 mile would be a tough 2 day route for me. I'd also have to update camping stuff, being an old guy my stuff is old, and expect today stuff is lighter.
Eric, how rough are these roads? I rode DrR2 in 2019 on Vittoria Voyager Hyper 700x37, which are smooth siped tread tires, and there were only one or two places where I wanted more rubber. |
