Cleaning Up Tire Sealant

I just swapped out a set of Panaracer GravelKings SK for some Compass tires. The GravelKings have plenty of life yet and I’ll probably mount those back on in the future depending on terrain. I was surprised at how caked on the dried Orange Seal sealant is as well as how much weight it adds. It seems to be pretty counter productive to have dried sealant stuck to the inside tread where is does not provide any punture protection, just adds weight. A lot of unnecessary weight.

Trying to peel it off is a Royal PIA. Leaving it on not only adds a lot of weight but it must effect the compliance of the sidewalls as in some spots it’s pretty thick and lumpy. Spend a lot of money for lighter and more compliant tires so seems a waste to have a bunch of dried sealant in there.

Is there an easy way to remove it? Possible to place the tires in a large baggie with some kind of solvent?

Any other solutions other than picking away at it?

That stuff is really stuck on. Hopefully there’s an easier way.

And! Is Finish Line any better at not drying up? I switched from Stan’s to Orange Seal and have been very happy except for this issue.

Well I can tell you that turning the tire inside out and hanging it in the sun to dry, hoping that it will turn into a nice layer of goo easy to peel off in one long strip, does not work.

I invert the tire and use a tool similar to the one below to remove stubborn sealant

I have turned the tires inside out and used duct or gorilla tape to "help" remove it. Lay a 6" strip on an area and rip it off, almost like a bikini wax. Beneficial if the tire is slightly warm.

I just cleaned out 4 tires yesterday. I turned them inside out, draped them over a lawn chair and sprayed them with the he power washer using a 25 degree nozzle. The tires look almost new on the inside.

I've not been impressed with the Finish Line sealant. It failed to seal a fairly small thorn hole for me. I'm planning to switch back to Orange Seal.

+1. It failed to even gravitate to a hole Orange Seal wouldn’t flinch at. There was a massive amount of Finish Line left in my tire. Course, it wipes away clean and easily.
