Heading up to Marin this weekend. I should drop in on Mike and see if he has a demo I can ride. For those of you in the area, his shop is pretty cool.

If you ride a 56, you're welcome to test ride mine. In the outer richmond district of SF.

Haven't been on this forum in probably well over a year, maybe two. Good to see this thread is still alive. I finally got around to building up a wheelset for my bike, Velocity A23/Duraace hubs (first wheelset I've ever built). Also got new cranks Sugino ox601 46-30 in black, with a 11-30 cassette. The low gearing is nice to have. Toying with the idea of a clutch rear derailleur to reduce chainslap when I'm in the gravel. Other then that still happy with the bike. I'll see If I can get an updated picture on here soon.

My new Black Mtn. Cycles Road

Some of the comments in this thread helped me make my decision, so I thought I'd post a pic. I had Mike do the build and have been riding it for about a month. Love it!

i'm looking at steel road frames to replace my surly traveler's check, and have narrowed things down to a soma pescadero and a BMC.

i'd been leaning towards the soma for its greater tire clearance, as i want to be able to run ~38c tires for gravel rides in the spring and mike lists the BMC's clearance at 33c, maybe 35c on his tech page

but then i stumbled across one of his blog posts that suggests/shows that the frame has room for even larger tires, with the right brakes: http://blackmtncycles.com/clearance-pt-ii-road-frames/

anyone care to share how wide/big they've gone with the tires on their bmc roads?

(i know, i know: get a monster cross. but after 23 years i'm kinda done with canti's)

realistically, even if you could squeeze 38's into the frame with the right calipers, which would be a definite "if" - they would leave precious little clearance, which is really not a good idea if riding rougher stuff. i wouldnt run my bmc road bike with 38's on or off road, even if they did fit, just too tight.

Man I can't relate how much I love the monster cross and with Paul canti's there is nothing I can't tackle. I even took 3 mins off my best time (according to mapmyride.com) doing the Paradise Dr. Loop from CG station under GGBridge (Marin side) and back after switching over to flat bars no less. BTW I'm riding Conti's Speed Ride 42c, as smooth and light all around tire I've ever rode, these have taken the place of Gravel King 40s.

If you truly desire to run 38s get the BMC Monster Cross and gain the option of running fenders should you ever choose. BMC MX is an awesome bike. I love "the right set" of cantis, but if they're not you're game just use some mini-V's. Paul Comp. Mini-Motos are some of the best rim brakes out there bar none.
