Chris King Espresso Tamper
A friend recently gave me a new Chris King espresso tamper size 53 mm. It is beautiful - an unnecessary indulgence I would not buy for myself. The only problem is that my La Pavoni Professional (post-millenium) espresso machine has a 51 mm basket and it appears that 53 mm is the smallest tamper size available.
Does anyone know whether the Chris King espresso tamper is available in size 51 mm or smaller? Has anyone heard of machining a tamper's diameter down to size? Thanks.

There's no reason that a local machine shop couldn't easily throw it on a lathe to take a couple mm off.

I hate seeing this used in this context. This entire forum is "first world luxury" and "first world problems" fom coffee tampers to crank length. It's not like the OP said the sky was falling as a result.

That thing looks sweet
Maybe you could get someone to throw it into a lathe and turn it down to 51mm. It would not take much work and it would then be a "custom" Chris King espresso tamper! |

You could possibly custom order a base in 51mm from CK, but one is not offered by them currently. 53mm is the smallest standard size that they currently offer.
Alternately I am sure you could have someone turn it down to 51mm with little effort. The base is removable and able to be swapped which is nice. |

I too was given one, a 58mm, but my Europiccola was like a 48. Had a friend machine it down to fit in the basket perfectly. It was great, custom adjust 'em.
If you do this, I would recommend that you bring both the tamper & the basket to the place where it's being done, so you're sure to get it done the right way. When I got my Gaggia, ironically, I needed a 58. C'est la vie. Gave it to a buddy with an entry-level machine, and it fit his perfectly. He's a happy camper now. |

Where's the proprietary, aerospace grade, pixie dust impregnated o-ring that avoids any and all existing tamper patents yet doubles the price of the unit ?

I interpreted that as a joke rather than a serious criticism of the OPs post. I think it's all in good fun to rib a little about a fancypants espresso tamper that is irritatingly 2mm too big.

http://www.rapha.cc/us/en_US/shop/ch.../product/CKT01 The regular King tamper is an indulgence, to be sure, but just like their hubs & headsets, more than worth the cost based on price x life of the product. |

Yes. A very nice summation of my intent. Sorry if I offended anyone.
