Any Screw Experts? (Why don't we see more Robertson in cycling?)

I just learned of an allen type of screw with a 4 sided (instead of 6 sided hole) called a Robertson. It is apparently used more in Canada.

The benefit for allen keys, is the Robertson is much less likely to get rounded out, which especially on the

Any thoughts on using them? Anyone have them on your bike?

Robertson is very common in Canada for things like wood screws,
it has many advantages over Philips head screws, which are less
easy to use. You can put a robertson screw on the tip of a screwdriver
with one hand, it stays there and you can drive it with much less
effort to keep the screwdriver engaged in the head.

The potential issue for bikes would be the 90 degree tool repositioning
due to only 4 sides. That, and of course the fact that anything adopted
needs to be a "standard". Not likely to happen for Robertson.

For bikes, Torx seems to be the new direction, replacing allen head
bolts in softer materials like aluminum. Camgagnolo has been
using Torx in their chainring bolts, and brake parts for a few years now.
And of course disc brake rotor mounting bolts have been Torx too.

pretty common for sheetrock and deck screws to have square head, not common at all (at least what i've seen) for smaller applications with much lower torque.

I've dealt with them before, both in buildings and in motor homes. While they are better than a Phillips head they're nowhere near as good as an Allen head IMO. It's a lot easier to round out a Robertson than an Allen.

. . . hanging out with Nina Hartley or Marilyn Chambers. On second thought, maybe "hanging out" was not the best choice of verbiage . . .

It took a lo-o-o-ng time for this thread to go where we all knew it would.

Which reminds me of a certain colleague of Mr. Jeremy by the name of Holmes...

Being a carpenter I have driven many many thousands of Robertson's ("square heads" to my American friends). They are great for low torque applications that you encounter in construction and far superior to Phillips. Allen is much better for higher torque and torx for non-ferrous metals. They were invented here on Canada, in fact just down the road from me and the original company still makes screws, driver bits, and screw drivers for them. When mated to a good driver a Robertson screw will stay on the driver bit and will not strip.
