I've given consideration to finances since I recently retired, but I'm working with a forum member to get one of these.

Kirk Onesto filet/Terraplane with Campy Super Record except Paul M-Racer mid reach brakes. Bora WTO33 wheels. Maybe a Nitto/SimWorks finishing kit.

What's crazy is this isn't even that pricey of a bike compared to everything out there right now. I reckon you'd hit $11,000 in retail dollars meaning you could probably build it for $7500 buying the frame for full retail and then carefully shopping for the kit lightly used on the forum.

Something like this but filet brazed and more sloping geo:

Why does one need to win a multi-million dollar lottery to buy the bike they want?

That would be my next top pick too.. I had to put it off for a while but it's the bike I want to graduate to here shortly.

From there, an English (fast roadie), an Ellis (strada fango), an Argonaut RM-3, and a few others.. a Hampsten Ti like Lavi's - the list really never ends.

Very good point - everybody's situation is different but I'm guessing for many here we're talking less about the money and more about priorities..

I'd be looking at my last/the ultimate rim-brake bike.

I'd very strongly consider working with a local, small-scale builder on a weight-weenie steel project. How light can we make a steel bike without choosing silly components (Berk, Darimo, etc) and without making the bike too fragile or noodly to ride?

The other options would be a Kirk Onesto or a Rob English.

Of course, having just taken delivery of a custom bike, and looking at a house extension in 2025, these are all deeply unlikely propositions.

Slightly OT, but the only time I would ever consider borrowing money to buy a bike was if David Kirk or Rob English announced they were hanging up their torch next year and were calling last orders, as it were.

I like bikes and all, but if I had a sudden influx of millions of dollars, a new bike would be down the list of purchases I would make.

edit: Wait, I may have misunderstood the premise of this thread...

Unless a complete financial catastrophe befalls us before I retire, I absolutely will get a Crumpton or a Pursuit within the next few years.

But if a genuine fantasy-level windfall occurs, I absolutely will get a Crumpton and a Pursuit and a Holland and a Kirk and a Llewellyn and a Pegoretti and an Ellis and a Nagasawa and an Eriksen and a Hampsten and a Jones ...and quite possibly a couple recumbents even. Plus a garage, I'll definitely have to get a garage.
