Its got pedals...but is it a bike??

An electric trike? Still a prototype but it looks like it could be a fun commuter type rig. Judging from Arcimotos FUV (which I would ride around town), they will get this vehicle dialed in and to market.

Is it a bike? Although it has pedals, it has a drivetrain different from any other "bike". Unlike other bikes, the cranks are not mechanically connected to the drive wheel - instead, the cranks power an electrical generator, and the wheels are powered only by electric motors. Does that make an e-bike, or more of a range extended electric cart (where the range is extended by cranking a generator)?

The other odd thing is that the video (and the photo above) make it look like the vehicle leans in proportion to turn radius, independent of speed. On a bicycle, lean angle is function of both turn radius AND speed. Notice that in the slow speed turn, it looks like the vehicle is leaning more than it should be, and the rider has to lean to the outside to maintain balance. It's as if the lean mechanism is linked to the steering axis. On other 3 wheeled "bikes" (such as the Aprilia motorcycles), the vehicle is free to lean just like a 2 wheel bike, and the leaning mechanism is only "locked" when the vehicle is coming to a stop.

Not clear to me what problem this ‘bike’ solves that an ebike doesn’t. More cargo? Faster?

I’ve test driven the FUV. Nice idea and it’s a local company, but I found steering required a lot of effort at low speeds, e.g. maneuvering into a parking place.

I would agree it's not really a "bike...not in the sense that there is anytime that human pedal power is directly involved in propelling it forward. So that would mean it's basically a three wheeled electric vehicle. Nothing wrong with that, and it is somewhat interesting.

They just released some sort of fix for this issue. I believe some sort of software fix.

Sorry to butt in here. From what I understand the Arcimoto ebike is supposed to be a class 2 or 3 (can’t remember because I don’t really care). It will likely sell to people like me who don’t have great balance on a 2 wheel bike. It can also stand alone as an exercise bike. It is semi recumbent so that interests me. I don’t like recumbent as they tend to be low to the ground. And I currently have a Luna Stealth that has a belt drive, small battery, and weighs only 40 lbs. So for me this is a great compromise as long as there is a way to park it and secure it.

I own an FUV and use it for errands and appointments. I live in a small town of 60k so it works well. But I work downtown where there is no parking so an ebike is what I use. They have not released the torque vectoring software update to make software enabled power steering yet. That isn’t predicted to be released until end of year. After 2 years with underwhelming power steering, especially at low speeds for parking, I will welcome to update.

No, of course not. It's a trike. It's not the first leaning trike, either.

The pedals seem like they're just a formality. Even in the promo video, they're hardly used.

Looks like a motorcycle to me. Like the ones they were using in Le Tour. As far as “bi”ke vs. “tri”ke, I believe the answer would be in the word itself, right?

It has a throttle..it can 'go' w/ pedaling..it's a 3 wheeled scooter..Not a 'e' bike at all.

That's why I called it a "range extended electric cart" above. It looks like it primarily runs off a battery, and the cranks operate a generator that can recharge the battery.
