DT Swiss ratchet issue?

Do they ever "skip" or crunch a tooth or two when worn or need clean and lube?

The reason I'm asking is that I just had the motor replaced on my Creo. Specialized did it for free even though out of warranty...thanks to my quite good LBS. When I took it into the shop I described this intermittent chain clunk tooth skip problem. I thought more likely worn chain, chain ring, or cog, but could not find that to be the case. They apparently believed it was in the Creo motor, and managed to get me a new one. ($1000 msrp!) I rode the new motor today for the first time and the same problem was going on in a non-repeatable pattern...once in a while. Then it dawned on me maybe it's the star ratchet. Going out to the garage now.

Some friends blew out a star ratchet on a tandem during a 200k, so it can happen. If it’s not too late, you might be able to clean things up and stretch out the springs a bit. Are your ratchets 18, 36 or 54t?

Does your wheel have the original star ratchet, or the EXP? certainly worth doing a good cleanup, and re-applying some light grease. IIRC, free hub grease from Dumonde is one of the recommended ones to use.

I have a set of stock 18T ratchets and springs if you need them. Yours for the price of shipping.

If you have the EXP hubs, there has been a recall on them for a while now for exactly the issue you are describing.

my bike has the original ratchets

I cleaned things up in there yesterday and test ride today. Ratchets looked just fine. Now that the bike has a new motor I am wondering if the issue is the controller software and not something mechanical?

You could remotely send an error codes through turbo studio app to your shop.

How’d the springs look behind the ratchets? I had one spring break on a very old dt hub once and it worked off and on for about three days until it jammed itself up and became fixed. Dt sent me new springs and ratchets (just in case).

nearly 100% sure

cleaning and lubing ratchets and springs solved the problem. And got a new motor covered by Spec. cuz me nor the bike shop did an accurate job of troubleshooting the problem from the start. Don't think the shop rode it before or after new motor install and just went by my suggestion "it could be the motor."
