Photos from Dirtphalt, Day 1 . . .

This year I unfortunately could only attend the opening day ride this past Friday, and there were only three of us for that–Eric (CNYrider), myself, and our friend Mike (A1A). We did 18 miles that took us over 2.5 hours, since we were in no hurry and frequently stopped to shoot pictures, talk, or just enjoy the view from wherever we were at. We had a great time, and I can’t wait to get out there to ride again!

One guy had carried his 20 lb. pack boat in and the other was walking out with a canoe and a pile of stuff. He really could have used a bike and trailer!

You just can’t really lose either riding or shooting photos at Boreas in any season, but it’s doubly true at peak foliage time. I rode my Lynskey Pro GR gravel bike that I like more every time I ride it. For photos, I took my Camelback pack filled with my Nikon D7500, 10-20mm and 28-300mm, and 105mm macro lenses plus my macro ring light to play with, my little Lumix as a backup and, of course, my iPhone. I planned to spend the whole day both riding and photographing, and I kept the Nikon at the ready attached to the front d-rings on the pack with some small carabiners so it won’t bounce around as I ride.

Morning sun provided plenty of light as I pedaled up the dirt road, but shortly after I arrived at the ponds, the clouds began to thicken and soon it was totally overcast. I made the best of it and then pedaled out along a different, increasingly challenging route that finally dumped me out on Upper Works Road up by Newcomb. So I rode the 11 miles back to my car on Blue Ridge Road for a total of 28 miles, 17 of them on gravel, and then headed home via Flanagan’s in Schroon Lake to get some dinner. On the whole, a satisfyingly adventurous day!

I love those pictures, especially the one of the lily pads. I've never been to the Adirondacks this time of year but your pics are making this flatlander miss New England.

Saturday we had a group of 4 ride the length of the Fairfax Cross County Trail. Normally about 40 miles from Great Falls down to the Occoquan. This time included a few extra miles with a little spur out towards Reston on the W&OD to a bike shop for a mechanical (not mine). We had one guy on a FS 29er, one hardtail 29er, me on my oldazz 26" HT, and one on a steel All City with no squish other than that provided by 700 x 50s (IIRC).

The northern 1/3 of the trail is mostly single track, rocky and/or rooty with some deep sticky muddy sections, with a bonus of being poorly marked in several spots. The southern ~half has some of that but is mostly gravel or paved. Couple short sections of grades steep enough that in my granny gear I nearly torque myself off the bike. Creek crossings throughout, some paved and easily ridden through as long as the rain hasn't been too heavy, others require dismounting for those of us who can't bunny hop across boulders. By the end of this 40 miles, we were only slightly less tired than after riding a century on road bikes.

There will be snow or ice on the road soon so I’m trying to get this ride in as much as I can. The tourists have not left yet.

Your pictures make me think about moving to the East. Looks like an enjoyable fall ride!

First autumnal feeling ride today, mildew, damp grass slippy rocks and roots. Won't be long before the mud makes a comeback.
