Based on the riding you intend to do, I'll second the recommendation for a light weight XC 29er. I've done some mtn biking in So Cal and there are some seriously legit trails where you could have lots of fun on something more heavy duty like a FS 29er or 27.5+. But if your interest is just cruising around then I'd suggest an XC-oriented 29er hardtail. I have one that I use for light single track, fire roads, and riding out on the road to the trail head. It's perfect for that type of riding.
