Way too cold in northern Michigan.
It was zero degrees in this pic two weeks ago.

-30° F does not compute. Error! Error!

No worries... Golf Sportwagen stocked with jumper cables, down blanket, Sorels, etc, etc.

Folks have had power failures locally due to the extreme cold.

Happened to us last week during the evening for about 3 hours... kinda vulnerable feeling when you're without power/heat and the ambient outside temp is -19 F. The house cools down fast.

We were 'a bit relieved' to see the lights come back on, and the furnace fire back up.

...and another kidney punch to those in The Polar Vortex: It was about 55° here in central coastal California. Very hard rain last night, so roads were not a great option. I did get a nice mountain bike ride in and saw this little fella crossing the trail. The view from the top is stunning, as it usually is after a rain. We have lovely skies out here on transition days.

Yes, much nicer outside Wednesday night at -20 than during the day Tuesday at -10. Moline airport reported -32 Thursday morning. Missed the all time state record low by 4 degrees.

Interesting comment. I'm driving a 1992 Dodge with Cummins diesel and 5 speed manual. Starting has been iffy, when I go to town in this weather I leave it running in store parking lots. Very tough to shift until it gets warmed up. I've backed out of the drive and been unable to get it into a forward gear without shutting the engine off. Keeps the brain engaged at least, but I'll be glad when this winter is over.

Do you have a gas stove? Can't remember... I light the burners for extra heat even when the electricity is on.

Worst possible winter scenario for me is power failure. When it happens I have to drag the 150 lb generator out of the basement, get it up and running before one boiler's pipes freeze and the other overheats. I am screwed if power goes out when I'm not at home.

Please be super careful about using unvented combustion devices for heating
