it really depends on how much you are walking. my walking is from the front of the coffee shop to the counter and abck. for that, SPD-SL work just fine. If you must go mtb pedals, then get a carbon XC shoe like an S-works. they are almost as light as road shoes and the carbon sol will really help on longer rides

Get a longer wrench and try this

Looks to me like as big a lump as the plain-metal setup.
But I like the looks of the screw-in cap.

I doubt they'll walk as comfortably than MTB shoes + SPD.
I do when I wear road shoes, not as good as the SPD setup, but better than the alternative. Also no fashion police issues. 😃😃

Even easier if using the Shimano SPD-L rubber cleat covers for walking, and would also reduce wear on the cleats: https://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-spd...-cleat-covers/

A good pair of mtb racing shoes like Sidi Dominators is good for road riding, though I like to retire them to off-road duty every couple of years so as to maintain a like-new (flat) foot-bed for road use.
A worn tread is also more of a problem while road riding with metal SPD cleats since the tread is part of the shoe-pedal interface (unlike with road cleats) that stabilizes the shoe and helps give a more consistent release force.

tldr
op. if you wanna, do it. for what you say, it's a good solution. the one issue i ran into doing that myself was with very localized hotspots on long hot days. a stupid stiff carbon soled mtb shoe is key to eliminating that.
