I'm more concerned about those who are "robbing you with a fountain pen" -- to paraphrase Woody...

Ship to store. Hold at location. It ain't hard.

I cannot imagine what kind of society we have become when we start thinking chopping off the hands of a thief is appropriate. Is this the new normal they speak of? You cannot be a moral leader in the world if you do not act morally.

LOL at the glitter --the herpes of the craft world.

This seems mostly to be an engineering problem of delivering stuff to people who aren't home. People have been opportunistic thieves since forever, and good luck changing that. Leaving valuable stuff on a step with no one around is just way too easy. It doesn't take much of a deterrent to stop most thieves--after all, most of our homes are just a broken glass window away from being emptied out, but how often does that happen. Even just a visual barrier would reduce a lot of thefts as it's unlikely a thief is going to go up to every door on the block searching for packages.

There are lots of good options already:
-deliver to work
-deliver to an Amazon locker
-deliver to the post office
-evening deliveries

But there's got to be a bigger solution out there to catch up to our changing shopping preferences. I'm sure we can figure it out.

Ship to a store or wherever is great. BUT WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO!! I've worked in corrections since 1991. You won't get much sympathy from me for these folks. I have rarely seen ANY remorse in almost 28 years of doing this job. From major crimes to the smallest of petty things. And it's probably only getting worse. When they start whining, I often ask how do they think their victim feels.

It's called Amazon acquiring the start up Ring Video Doorbell. Just a step towards the goal of letting delivery drivers open your door to put the package inside your house.

Then the porch pirates will have to breach the door if they want to get the package....

I didn't mean to start a firestorm by commenting on the lack of interest on the part of the police, but whoever commented that if things are not prosecuted, they become the norm is on the money.

The suburbs of Vancouver are now rife with house-breaking by drug users, and rampant theft from industrial sites is now the norm--including stolen copper wire, or any other scrap that is not nailed down. My mom's house has been broken into and ransacked four times in the last twenty years--and every piece of critical paper went out the door in pillowcases to get sorted at the crack house. A friend was charged for pulling a gun on the scrap thieves at his shop--the thieves walked. My brothers' shop has been raided multiple times for anything in the yard not nailed down. A former Crown prosecutor said to me that Canada is now a post-punishment society, and for petty theft this seems to be the case.

The old common law maxim was you were entitled to 'quiet enjoyment' of your property--hard to have that if people are breaking in with impunity.

(London was just as bad, but that's another story...)

New York embraced the 'broken windows' theory of policing--and yes, there were problems with racial profiling, but NYC is so much safer (and more crime free) than in was a decade ago. If you don't enforce, you get more crime IMO.

A good start, as are the program where they will put it in a car if one is parked. And yes, it would probably be a good idea to make alternative delivery arrangements, like Amazon locker, picking up something valuable at Fedex etc.

no, I think you are correct - I somehow remember a Dylan verse saying "some people rob you with a fountain pen". But Pretty Boy Floyd came directly to mind - I love that song - Arlo does it well too.

But, back to scumbags - It would have been nice if he posted their pictures for all the world to see.

I'm lucky. I have an Amazon Locker and a FedEx Store 2 minutes from me.

Bob Dylan in "Talkin' New York" was making a reference to Woody Guthrie's song “Pretty Boy Floyd."

Talkin’ New York

WRITTEN BY: BOB DYLAN

Ramblin’ outta the wild West
Leavin’ the towns I love the best
Thought I’d seen some ups and downs
Till I come into New York town
People goin’ down to the ground
Buildings goin’ up to the sky

Wintertime in New York town
The wind blowin’ snow around
Walk around with nowhere to go
Somebody could freeze right to the bone
I froze right to the bone
New York Times said it was the coldest winter in seventeen years
I didn’t feel so cold then

I swung onto my old guitar
Grabbed hold of a subway car
And after a rocking, reeling, rolling ride
I landed up on the downtown side
Greenwich Village

I walked down there and ended up
In one of them coffee-houses on the block
Got on the stage to sing and play
Man there said, “Come back some other day
You sound like a hillbilly
We want folk singers here”

Well, I got a harmonica job, begun to play
Blowin’ my lungs out for a dollar a day
I blowed inside out and upside down
The man there said he loved m’ sound
He was ravin’ about how he loved m’ sound
Dollar a day’s worth

And after weeks and weeks of hangin’ around
I finally got a job in New York town
In a bigger place, bigger money too
Even joined the union and paid m’ dues

Now, a very great man once said
That some people rob you with a fountain pen

It didn’t take too long to find out
Just what he was talkin’ about
A lot of people don’t have much food on their table
But they got a lot of forks ’n’ knives
And they gotta cut somethin’

So one mornin’ when the sun was warm
I rambled out of New York town
Pulled my cap down over my eyes
And headed out for the western skies
So long, New York
Howdy, East Orange

We have a social consensus on reasonable penalties for theft, and a legal system to determine guilt and impose sentences.

Each community can provide additional funding to its local PD, to prioritize the enforcement of these crimes. Or they can continue to enjoy low taxes . . .
But what if the legal system is antiquated or overrun with other issues and can't address the needs of the society? Package theft is only something that's more common now because more people are buying items online in the past decade.

And beyond a simple "it's barbaric", what's wrong with a sliver of a finger? It will cost taxpayers less money, don't need to put criminals in jail, and they'll heal up. Sure there's a scar, but kind of need that reminder, right?
