He has compared the Bridgestone bikes with modern Rivendell's. I don't remember the specifics but something like a Riv custom is a 20, a run-of-the mill Riv is an 18 and the best Bridgestones were much, much lower.

maybe true, but i'd pick an RB-1 over any of their current whackjob designs in a heartbeat

I've had an RB1, RB2, and multiple Italian bikes, and the Italian bikes are better... I'm sorry. Not to knock the Bridgestones too much; they made solid frames but they were definitely lower rent than the best of what Europe was offering. That said there were eyelets on even the RB-1 but it's not like there was an abundance of clearance there. My 1982 colnago actually has more clearance than my early 90's RB1 did - it just didn't have eyelets. Bridgestone made some nice touring bikes though but lots of nice touring and sport-touring bikes came out of Japan back in the day.

Exactly, it was a "normal" road bike, you know, for people that ride their bikes on the road for 20+ miles in a sitting.

What do those numbers mean? Is a 20 like the top score? When comparing the Bridgestones RB -1 or 2, it should be compared to something like the Roadeo or since it appears to be discontinued, the Roadini? But the Roadini is tig-welded and has a kind of weird looking seat lug:

It´s these lugs that make me think of english bikes when i think of Rivendells. RS says there is no influence. Those gothic lugs remind me of Hetchins. I think it looks heavy and unnatractive.

Pegoready thats exactly the era i was thinking about. I had a Trek 770 with that seat cluster.

I was never a big fan of elaborate lugs, and these do look a little clunky to me. However, the brazing is really clean.
