What is your favorite podcast app?

Hey all,

Of late there seems to be quite a few interesting cycling related podcasts I want to listen to (Dk's interview, Steve Hampsten's interview, Rodelab's interview).

I've not been a heavy podcast user. I've used it basically on long drives mostly when I get tired of the constant chatter or the constant ads or when I'm out where I have to changed stations every 5 miles.

I'd prefer not to stream in this instance since it will use up my mobile data allotment. I download and then just play it via bluetooth thru the car.

However, I can't seem to find an app that nicely:

1. Tell me what episodes, if it's series, I've already listened to
2. I can't seem to find an app that let's me pause and continue where I left off. Often it can be weeks or months later, given above scenario, so it'd a nice feature.

Ok.. again, I'm not a heavy podcast user but it seems I've tried Castbox (current), Pocket cast, and a few others and they don't seem to have these features. I was going to try Audible next. Btw I'm on Android.

May well be user error or that podcast apps primary use case is for streaming and my usage is not the norm.

I use pocketcasts, which you mentioned. I'm not sure in what way it doesn't do what you're wanting.

It has played vs. not played indication, and picks up where you left off - even months apart. And does so across devices if you get it for multiple platforms.

Pocketcasts lets you download them, can auto download new episodes if you'd like, tracks current position, and marks something as played once you've either listened to it or otherwise indicated you'd like to mark it as played.

It's a very robust podcast app.

You can chose to have it start certain podcasts (but not others) at some amount of time in (if a particular one always starts with 45 seconds of ads, then you can have it start 40 seconds in, etc), auto skip dead air on some, auto add them to the current playing cue (The Dan LeBatard show is always auto downloaded and added to cue for me, so as soon as I plug in my headphones it's ready to go), and download and keep a certain number of that podcast (for example, it always has the two most recent episodes of ESPN's Get UP! for me, despite the fact that I rarely listen to it, I have fresh episodes downloaded if I have the time to listen to that one).

As MaraudingWalrus has mentioned, PocketCasts does in fact do the things you are looking to do. You can also create filters to mark episodes as downloaded, played, etc.

I've been using Overcast for a long time; iOS only I believe.
Lots of nice features and certainly all the ones you listed.

I’ve also had good luck with Overcast.

i assume you're on android. if ios, apple has their own podcast app that's ok, serviceable for occasional listeners but not the best.

of the 3rd party apps, pocket casts is my favorite.
eminently usable, and still very customizable. very intuitive to use. you can change download preferences, i have mine to download episodes on wifi only but i can manually initiate a download if i want to. i also have mine set to delete episodes i've listened to but you can change that as well.

fwiw, any decent podcast app will mark your old and new episodes and will also retain your position within each episode should you jump back and forth.

screenshot below
you can see at a glance what's old, what's unplayed (complete circle) what's partially played (incomplete circle shows progress thru the episode)
