"A cyclist suffered horrific injuries when he was impaled by his own handlebars in a freak crash.

Dane Phillips, 45, was pedaling to the shops when he was struck by a car which sent his mountain bike flying 10ft into the air.

When the bike landed the handlebars skewered his right leg leaving him agonizing pain."

Yes, a "freak" crash....completely unavoidable.....

Funny how the story is that he was impaled, not that he was struck by a car.....

He was probably running a stop sign so he deserved it......

Yup, totally agree, Ozz. And the comments on the Fox "News" page were exactly how I imagined they would be.

In a truly freak accident, my friend's 6-year-old son was killed last year after falling off his bicycle and getting caught on the bars; the end ripped into his little body and cut an artery.

I hope none of us ever have to deal with what my friend has to confront on a daily basis.

Holy sh*t...I’m so sorry to hear that.

This just freaked me out because I recognize that bike. I was browsing Craigslist last year for a bike for my wife who was trying to learn to ride a bike again after 20 years of not being on one (funny). She’s short so I figured a kids bike would work. I ended up buying THAT EXACT BIKE from a guy and planned to give it to my son when he gets older.

This is horrifying. I will be selling or donating it now. It’s a freak accident, but part of me wants to make sure it’s not the bike itself. I’m not even kidding, take a look...

The comments on the Fox News story are a sad reminder of the kind of people that share our roads with us. To be honest, I don’t think about that when I ride but I probably should keep it in mind.

every parent's nightmare, and I honestly wish I had not read that, but my heart goes out to the family. I don't really believe in PTSD by proxy, but don't want to test it with anymore more stories like that...

i got a cool scar when i was 12 from falling on my handlebars and almost rupturing my spleen. a few months later the steertube on the same bike separated and i knocked out a few of my front teeth. i dont bmx anymore. the coolest trick you can do now is go fast.

I wasn’t trying to ruin anyone by posting Denny’s story, sorry.

I’m also sick of seeing stories about cyclists getting hit, especially when I know them personally. Be safe out there

My kids also rode the exact same model. It was not the bike, it was a freak accident.

Same thing happened to me as a kid. Handlebar was stopped by my ribs though. Otherwise it would have gone in further.

Also had a ski pole snap in half and go through my face to be stopped by my teeth. I think someone was trying to tell me I wasn't invincible. Didn't stop me from racing criteriums, though.

Also, the Ops article got an audible gasp from me with the pics.
