What Zipp rim are these?

Not fluent on Zipp speak to put it lightly.

These seem to be 88/188 hubs, but rims are what? 'firecrest'?

There were a few versions of the 188 hubs but they look like prior to 2015 firecrest wheels to me. If 12, 13 or 14 YM is harder to tell tho without having a better look at the flanges of the hubs.

Firecrest was some type of proprietary technology that Zipp used on all models within a certain price range for awhile. The rim you have is a 303. I can't remember what the Firecrest was or was supposed to do, but I'd assume it was claimed to be faster or more stable in a crosswind. Usually it's one of those.

They also made different versions of the 88/188 hubs. Plus they had to recall some front hubs due to flange failures

It's pretty simple.

The Firecrest shape made the rim fatter with the edge of the airfoil in the rim which was suppose to dampen turbulence and increase handling in cross winds. In the older rims, the fattest part of the rim was basically the brake track. You can see the ridge on your rim which is the fattest part and about a 1/2 inch from the brake track.

At the same time, the previous clincher rims were an aluminum composite braking surface which was replaced with an all carbon brake track. I have an old pair of 404/808 alum/carbon clincher rims, and my 303 firecrest are the all carbon brake track.

The Firecrest rims are noticeably thicker than the previous toriodal shape.

Do yourself a favor and change out those hubs now.

Flanges like to break and then you're hosed

M

edited to add: the bearings aren't all that great and the hubs don't like to stay in adjustment very long
