Canti Content - Shorter Pads?
Happy Friday All,
Building up a canti cross frameset and I find that my TRP 8.4 Mini-Vs with their stock pads/carriers won't open enough to pass a wider tire without deflating due to the pads hitting the fork legs. A first world problem for sure, but any recommendations on cartridge-style pads in a shorter length? |

what is the maximum length that will clear? Do your rear pads work ok?

I just looked at pix of those brakes and the pads on them look to be about as short as any I have ever seen. When I mounted a rack on the same studs as my PAUL cantis I used some longer bolts and spacers. If you got bolts and spacers like them you might be able to move the brakes forward enough to use the pads you have.

Size
Rears are fine, but front (ENVE Carbon CX Canti Fork) have interference.
Pads are presently about 55mm long and I think something 45mm long in the front would clear. |

I once used stainless set screw collars I got at True-Value. I pulled the canti stud, put on the the collar on it like a spacer and the pad cleared the fork leg. Make sure the stud has ample threads with the collar to engage the thread in the fork canti mount. Else get thee canti studs with more/longer threaded portion for a 1CM of spacing I'd say.
The collar set screw helped so I could make the 3 hole spring plate be in correct alignment too.

Koolstop CX pads https://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/38132...-1/s-l1000.jpg
You could also use these, which have a slender back https://www.discobrakes.com/?s=0&t=2&c=29&p=155&tb=001 Last edited by MikeD; 08-28-2021 at 11:42 AM. |

Canti Content - Shorter Pads?
Question:
Anyone ever tried running Kool Stop Thin Lines backwards on the front wheel? Since they’re a solid brake pad and theoretically wouldn’t eject themselves, I was wondering if that might give some more front tire clearance. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Shimano used to have V brakes that had pads with the long end facing forward. |

Update
Update: I've got some titanium canti bosses inbound from China via eBay. 5mm longer threaded portion should improve the fitting. Now need to source some spacers.

I hope moving the arms further outboard and use of Ti instead of steel bosses doesn't contribute to a squeal/shudder issue. Honestly, I've had the least setup problems with cheap Tektro CR720 wide cantilevers that use MTB style threaded shoes because you can use thinline pads, thicker pads, or even short road (caliper brake) pads for best fit and it's easy to adjust the distance between pad and rim, the toe-in, as well as the transverse cable length to dial in the fit- so some combination of several variables will work with some fussing. Shimano XTs and CX70s also worked better for me on several bikes than TRPs. YMMV, it depends a lot on the stud location and fork choice, which is why so many people hate cantis, it's not a one size fits all thing. If you get frustrated, try the CR720s, they're cheap and more adjustable. Mine are squeal free, used almost daily on a couple of funky 18+degree nasty rutted fire road descents on my CX/gravel bike and set up with high mechanical leverage (longer, higher transverse cable setup) they work great on my tandem as well (with precious cargo on the back!)

Canti
For the record, my "Canti Content" thread title is only about the bosses.
All sorts of time futzing around with straddle cable angles, fork mounted hangers, shudder and stuff...never got better than the suggestion of braking. The white knuckle experience of attempting to brake with cantis (FSA Energy?) on the steep descent following Pennel Hill (Ed Clark Road) about 6 years was enough for me. Once I tried mini-V's (TRP 8.4's to be exact) I've never looked back. No shudder and they stop my 210lbs self just fine. Last edited by type2sam; 08-31-2021 at 08:02 PM. Reason: e |
