Gunnar Hyper-X -- 700c mode (Big League Blue)
Gunnar Hyper-X
Hi all, Just finished building up this blue Gunnar Hyper-X with a 700c x 35c setup. Loving this bike. I was contemplating selling this frameset, owing to having its near twin built alongside... However, I couldn't decide between 700c or 650b... so.... bike #2! So far the build: Steve Potts Type II (R) fork SRAM Red 2012 2 x 10 Shimano GRX 30/46 11-36 10sp SRAM Red Yaw FD SRAM GX RD DT Swiss 350 / Easton R90SL wheelset Panaracer Pasela 700c x 35c TRP Spyre brakes (180f / 160r) Geo is custom (73-SA // 72-HA) with 75mm BB drop. Rides will be urban / suburban mixed surfaces. Many thanks to the kind folks at Gunnar. -R Last edited by Radius PNW; 09-22-2023 at 02:49 PM. |

That checks all the boxes...very nice. Always lusted after a Potts fork on my rigid MTB. Interested in ride report on gravel model. Enjoy!!

This warms my heart. I had my Gunnar Roadie painted this color in 2005 as a tribute to my childhood Schwinn LeTour. It took Gunner a few years to offer it as a monthly color, but every bike I have seen in this color looks amazing. Enjoy it

On road and rough shoulders, I can say that the Steve Potts fork feels truly sublime. Confidence inspiring during out-of-the-saddle efforts and hard braking, minimal flex, yet somehow quite smooth. I looked at bit closer at the design, and it really is quite special... it is not a standard unicrown fork at all... the fork crown has rounded sloping shoulders, however the blades are sleeved into the crown... beautiful detail, and the effect on the ride is stellar... Highly recommended... -R Last edited by Radius PNW; 09-19-2023 at 08:12 PM. |

Why did you choose the Steve Potts fork over a Gunnar steel fork?
What were you looking for in the custom geometry-why were the angles and BB drop important to you? Custom bikes always have interesting stories!

However, I have no regrets, and this fork actually may ride better than my Gunnar straight blade unicrown did. And both are superior to me to the carbon fork this bike started life with. I went custom because my shop was a dealer, and also sold Trek. I had a Domane that felt perfect in geo to me, with a 78mm BB drop, but wanted the longer chainstay and tire clearance that my then commuter 700c Kona Rove had. And I was craving a light steel bike again, after owning initially a Roadie from Gunnar. As Gunnar could do BB drop in 5mm increments, and I decided deeper wasn’t the way I wanted to go, I ended up at 75mm. So it was a blend of two of my bikes. To me, they nailed it. And working with them was a fantastic experience. Thanks for your question. -R Last edited by Radius PNW; 09-29-2023 at 01:57 AM. |
