Hey, that's a good idea. I may have to do that.

Another one: I got back into cycling ten years ago. For the first couple of years I ran my rear brake cable/housing to the right of the head tube instead of elegantly looping it around on the left. Because I didn't know any better and didn't take notice of how it was done on other bikes.

Ugh. Painful to look at!

I think if you're going to do that, you should keep it protected from the elements.
That's what I was getting at... not questioning the rain worthiness of tubular tires

Anyway. Here's one I learned recently--not cycling related:

If you put a grocery bag over your hand/foot before stuffing it in to your wet suit, you'll slide right in, even when it's already wet. As soon as your bag covered hand/foot emerges from the sleeve/leg, just pull the bag out, put it on your next appendage, and repeat.

If you put plastic bags over your feet before stuffing them into your cycling shoes (as well as putting on overshoes/booties) in the winter you can buy an extra half hour or so on the bike on frosty days in the dead of winter without needing chemical toe warmers.

I've never had a problem with rattling CO2 cartridges 'cause I always tape em together with a valve extender in the valley between the 2 cartridges.

...then it don't matter what valve you run 'cause there's always a valve extender with you

My aunt Matilda's mustache, tubulars in the muck are fine and maybe even.....superior!!! But put the far superior tubular tire in an old sock...done.

Got another one. I've been fiddling with my rear derailleur for a few days now. Turns out the thread in the barrel adjuster was stripped. I got the LBS to tap out the derailleur and put in a new barrel adjuster.

But in the course of doing all this, a strand on the cable started coming loose. Peeved, I thought I was going to need to get a new cable, but then I had a brainwave: what if I just peeled the strand back to before the cable stop on the chainstay?

Eh? Well, what do you know. It worked!

I guess now I just have to see how long my ingenious fix lasts.

Just long enough for it to ruin a ride or puncher your finger!

Replace that cable!

or at least use silver solder, lotā€™s of flux and solder that sucker solid.

Ignore the pessimism! Iā€™ve done that ā€œcut the stray cable strand below the pinch boltā€ many times. Never had any problems! Good job thinking of the hack and employing it!

This is my town bike, so I'm not doing any "rides" per se. In fact, I just got back from a trip to the supermarket loaded down with cartons of almond milk and sundry other comestibles. Rode like a charm.

I even had a carton of eggs stuffed into one saddlebag. Went over some bumpy asphalt, but no cracks. You could say that, erm...the cracks did not produce cracks.
