D'oh! Things you learn or figure out after a long time

Any amusing examples? Here's one for me: All this year I've been annoyed by the rattling in my saddlebag when going over bumps or rough tarmac. I figured it was something to do with the saddlebag itself, and simply put up with it, all the while entertaining notions of eventually getting myself a new one.

Then today it occurred to me that it might have something to do with the two CO2 cartridges I've got stuffed in there. That brainwave was followed by another one: could they be bumping into each other?

Yes. Yes, they were. Feeling all Einstein-like, I did this:

Put the tire levers in between said two CO2 cartridges, and hey, presto! No more rattling. So today I enjoyed the rare frisson of simultaneously feeling both smart and stupid.

What you got?

CO2 goes in the middle of the tube. Tire lever goes on top. Tool goes on the bottom. This in itself should take care of most rattling but sometimes it doesn't so this summer I put a piece of cut tube around the CO2 and around the multi tool.

Done.

Only took me 15 years to do that.

cut up an old tube and put the C02 cart inside the tube like a sleeve. no more rattles and you dont freeze your fingers when you finally use it. obviously the sleeve is re-usable on the next cart.

I like using the fingers off an old dish glove... Take your hand out first before cutting though.

After all these years I've learned:

CO2 = finite

Pumps = infinite

I've ridden tubulars in the rain. What's the problem?

I personally put tubes in a ziplock baggie to protect it a bit from the other stuff in the saddle bag and to act as a cheap man's vapor barrier.

I swapped stems a month ago and got some play in my headset. After tightening/retightening several times I realized that it has less than a mm of play so it would shift. Had to put an extra spacer in the to make sure there wouldn't be a gap. Never had that issue in the past swapping stems.

Also the pushing the rear derailleur cage to avoid touching the chain when removing/installing rear wheels. Only last year learned that trick.

If you ride dirt/gravel roads in the rain, or even just regular roads, you'll be throwing up a ton of nasty road grime and debris into that tubular under the seat.

I think if you're going to do that, you should keep it protected from the elements.
