Help me understand this - I don't get why people ride their $12k bike on trainers
It's not like people are going anywhere on a trainer and the gear count matter doesn't matter either. Imagine all the sweat dripping on those bikes. All the corrosions going on caused by the sweat... get a beat-up 25-pound Schwinn on those trainers and twist and jerk all they want.
I laugh every time those trainer ads show people riding their $12k bikes on a $1000 trainer, and people actually do it. |

I'd rather see a $12k bike being ridden indoors than not ridden at all.
In the near future, I'll be paying some good coin for a custom titanium all-road bike. I plan to beat the hell out of it, which includes plenty of trainer time and salty winter rides.

What's to understand? There is no need for you to understand. It is their bike, money and time.

Quite simple, when you have a bike that fits you perfectly you enjoy using it. Sometimes you might blast through some gravel with it, maybe you go out for a ride in bad weather and get caught in the rain, or maybe you sweat on it during a training session. When your done you clean it if you want to, if you don’t care so what....??? No need to judge others (me) for their (my) choices.

Maybe you're just not wealthy enough to afford putting a $12k bike on a trainer.
The poor are a jealous lot.

Because sweat can be easily wiped up with a towel after the workout. Because the forces from a modern direct drive trainer line up with those when you're riding outside, making the fear of cracking a frame, especially one with through-axles vastly overblown. You really should find more important things in life to worry about than other people's choices when it comes to their bike on their trainer.... |

When your cheapest bike is $12K this is the one you put on the trainer.

If your bike gets sweaty, wipe it off. Very simple concept. I've ridden well over 100,000 miles on rollers/trainer during my lifetime, never damaged a bike.

To not be snarky, I’ll give you a real world answer to me. If you live in an apartment, especially if you and your SO have bikes that have to hang on a wall as there is no other space for them and the trainer and mat are folded up and put in a closet when not in use, the addition of a «*trainer bike*» is not possible unless you gave up the couch or the table you eat dinner at.

If you can afford a $12k bike, you can afford a beater bike for the trainer

Absolutely correct, but that doesn’t mean you need to buy a trainer bike.
