question about a cheap 1x conversion

my friend gave me her old bike. its a rockhopper with 6spd deore. she bought a new shifter, rear der, and rear wheel to convert it to 1x10.
my question is what is the proper narrow wide chainring to mount to a crank with 74/110 bcd?
or should i just tell her to get a shimano zee crank with an external bb and call it a day.

there are a ton of makers of 110 bcd narrow wide rings.

how many teeth were you thinking for the ring?

I have a lot of reliable miles on a race-face narrow wide ring that i fitted to a 110BCD crank, no issues. They can be had for about 50 bucks or so.

probably a 36t. the crank is a shimano mt60. i dont have that tool to measure bcd so i didnt know if the 110 listed on velobase was the same compact 110 that they make tons of narrow wide rings for. i assume mounting it on the inside where the middle ring would be would optimize chainline.

110 should be 110, but be aware that some newer shimano chainrings also have a 110BCD, but 4 arm, so you specifically need a 110 5-hole chainring.

also remember you will need single speed chainring bolts to fit a single ring. agree that the middle position is a good spot for it.
