Today's plan was to take the Kirk out again. But it was overcast and raining early so I changed plans. Pulled the ol' 37 year old Team USA down and figured I'd go do a fun ride in the rain. They didn't work either as the storm was moving on as I finally got done. So it wound up just being a lazy 30 miler on the old Raleigh.

Adirondacks this past Monday . . .
After working all three days photographing a cycling event from my car, on Monday I took the 53-mile road route from the event and got in some miles myself, cruising through some beautiful countryside northwest of Saranac Lake in the heart of the Adirondacks. Temps got into the 80’s and so there was a mandatory stop in Saranac Lake at the Stewart’s convenience store to get some refreshments. But then it was back out of town as soon as possible to enjoy some more mid-summer cycling bliss. If you’ve never ridden in the Adirondacks, you really should!

North Creek Adirondacks gravel on Tuesday
After spending the weekend up north, I couldn’t leave the Adirondacks without also in a gravel ride, and this one was on one of my favorite loops in my favorite area around North Creek, including the small villages of Johnsburg, Sodom, and the vacation community along the shore of Garnet Lake. There’s plenty of wonderful gravel near town and I’ve been there so much that I always know where I am. But I managed to also go explore something new at Garnet Lake, where I rode the 1.5-mile road into this beautiful, quiet lake. A nice lady there at one of the cabins refilled my water bottles for me, and I continued my explorations. Heading up over the shoulder of Crane Mountain, I hooked up with Johnsburg Road and head back toward town, only to have to make a detour onto busy Rt. 28 (NOT one of my favorite ride routes!) when I found a closed bridge in “downtown” Johnsburg. The weather was just about perfect, with an afternoon high of 80 going down as the sun did the same, plus flowers blooming everywhere. The deer flies were out–and those little Sh**s fly FAST–giving me ample encouragement to keep up my pace to outrun them. I ended up with 36.5 miles by the time I finished, totally drained, back in town. But a stop at local eatery Basil & Wicks for some post ride food and drink fortified me for the drive home.
