Well this was a EL OS weekend for me so the 3rd day taking out one of my bikes made with it. Today was the custom Wayne Evans for what was supposed to be a leisurely ride around the north end of the valley taking pictures. Cut the ride short when I had a rare flat which left me down to just one spare innertube.

Where I flatted:

What I was riding today:

I think we are on our 8th round of our annual trip to a little island off the BC Coast- Hornby Island. Gorgeous weather, giant sunsets, white sand, warmish (but crystal clear and highly swimmable) water, and a heap of cycling!

I took my new Rock Lobster as it was designed with this kind of riding in mind. (And no, I didn’t commission a bike for a trip!). It’s been stellar so far on tight and twisty singletrack, plus the gravel trails to and from the MTB area. One thing I notice is the ability to give a little pull on the bar and pop the front wheel over roots and obstacles when climbing - like a hardtail MTB. The geometry is just great for this type of riding. I also have tried descending in the drops more often and it’s definitely like piloting a missile (and harder on the shoulders) but pretty exciting!

I didn’t photograph the crazy stuff as I need two hands on the bar! Great weed- nfluenced trail names like “Four Dead Aliens” and ‘Bitchin Camaro’ went along with outrageously fun massive downhill berm-trails like ‘No Horses’ - pucker-inducing on drop bars! The last photo was an easy trail, but just so beautiful and peaceful. It’s been an unusually wet year in this part of BC, so it is quite green and lush for late July.

If you ever want an off-the-beaten-track vacation, it’s pretty great - or don’t come and we can keep this place lower key !

I still need to get to Hornby! "Little Hawaii" I've heard people call it.

Here's some pics from a camping trip my wife and I did about two weeks ago. 5 Gulf Islands (Saturna, Mayne, Galiano, Pender and Salt Spring). Short miles but lots of climbing. Good times.

KJ

Pretty sure it's a Brooks. My buddy has one too. Though it looks like they slightly have changed the style.

More Hornby! Riding with my lil guy this AM!

I bought a Santa Cruz Blur with almost full XT hydro 9spd for $150 last week, so he’s riding that instead of a hardtail. Needs new tires and a wider bar and not sure if shocks are fully functional, but they seems safe. Wealthy owner passing along a deal as his teenaged son has outgrown it - 🙏🏼.
